Raising Righteous Children

A child is a trust you will be asked about — not a possession. What the Qur'ān and Sunnah teach about raising them on tawḥīd, prayer, mercy, justice, and character.

1.Children Are a Trust, Not a Possession

'Guard yourselves and your families from a Fire.' Wealth and children are but a trial, an adornment of this life. The Prophet ﷺ said each of you is a shepherd, responsible for his flock — and a man is a shepherd over his household.

Qur’ānChildren are a trust every parent will be questioned about.

o you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey allah in what he commands them but do what they are commanded.

Qur’ānChildren are a trust every parent will be questioned about.

and know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that allah has with him a great reward.

Qur’ānChildren are a trust every parent will be questioned about.

wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. but the enduring good deeds are better to your lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

ayyub bin musa narrated from his father, from his grandfather, that the messenger of allah said :"there is no gift that a father gives his son more virtuous than good manners

2.The First Lesson — Tawḥīd

Luqmān's first counsel to his son was: 'do not associate anything with Allah — shirk is a great wrong.' Open your children's first words with 'lā ilāha illā Allāh', and root them in the certainty that Allah sees, and to Him is the return.

Qur’ānThe first thing to plant — 'there is no god but Allah'.

and [mention, o muhammad], when luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, "o my son, do not associate [anything] with allah. indeed, association [with him] is great injustice."

Qur’ānThe first thing to plant — 'there is no god but Allah'.

[and luqman said], "o my son, indeed if wrong should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, allah will bring it forth. indeed, allah is subtle and acquainted.

Qur’ānThe first thing to plant — 'there is no god but Allah'.

o my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.

3.Teaching the Prayer Early

'Enjoin prayer upon your family and be steadfast in it.' The Prophet ﷺ taught: command your children to pray at seven, and at ten see to it firmly. Ismāʿīl (ʿalayhi al-salām) was praised for enjoining prayer and zakāh on his people.

Qur’ānBuild the prayer into them while they are young.

and enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. we ask you not for provision; we provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.

Qur’ānBuild the prayer into them while they are young.

and he used to enjoin on his people prayer and zakah and was to his lord pleasing.

Qur’ānBuild the prayer into them while they are young.

o my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.

4.Mercy, Affection, and Play

The Prophet ﷺ kissed his grandsons, and when a man said he had ten children and never kissed one, he said: 'the one who shows no mercy is shown no mercy.' He would let al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn climb his back in prayer. He is not of us who does not show mercy to our young.

Qur’ānRaise them with mercy and affection, not harshness.

so by mercy from allah, [o muhammad], you were lenient with them. and if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. so pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. and when you have decided, then rely upon allah. indeed, allah loves those who rely [upon him].

Qur’ānRaise them with mercy and affection, not harshness.

and lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "my lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when i was] small."

HadithAhmad Muhammad Shakir: Sahih · Al-Albani: Sahih · Zubair Ali Zai: HasanRaise them with mercy and affection, not harshness.

anas bin malik narrated that:"an older man came to talk to the prophet, and the people were hesitant to make room for him. the prophet said: ;he is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young and does not respect our elders

ibn abbas narrated that the messenger of allah said:" he is not one of us who does not have mercy upon our young, respect our elders, and command good and forbid evil

5.Justice Between Children

'Allah orders justice.' When a Companion gave one son a gift, the Prophet ﷺ refused to witness it: 'fear Allah and be just between your children.' Unequal treatment plants envy and breaks the bond the parent most needs to keep.

Qur’ānBe just between your children — favouritism wounds.

indeed, allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. he admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.

Qur’ānBe just between your children — favouritism wounds.

o you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. whether one is rich or poor, allah is more worthy of both. so follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. and if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed allah is ever, with what you do, acquainted.

6.Teaching Manners and Character

Luqmān taught his son not to turn his cheek in scorn, not to walk in arrogance, and to lower his voice. The Prophet ﷺ said no father ever gave his child a gift better than good manners — character is the inheritance that outlasts wealth.

Qur’ānNo gift a father gives is better than good character.

and do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. indeed, allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.

Qur’ānNo gift a father gives is better than good character.

and be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys."

7.Your Example, and Your Duʿā for Them

The righteous pray: 'our Lord, grant us from our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes.' Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhi al-salām) prayed to be kept establishing prayer, and his offspring too. A parent's example teaches more than a lecture, and a parent's supplication reaches where advice cannot.

Qur’ānThey copy what you are, and rise by your duʿā.

and those who say, "our lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous."

and we have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. his mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [he grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, "my lord, enable me to be grateful for your favor which you have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which you will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. indeed, i have repented to you, and indeed, i am of the muslims."

8.The Fruit — a Righteous Child Who Prays for You

When a person dies his deeds end — except three, one of them a righteous child who prays for him. The Prophet ﷺ said a servant's rank is raised in Paradise and he asks how, and is told: 'by your child's seeking forgiveness for you.' This is the harvest of the raising.

Qur’ānThe fruit — a child whose prayer keeps rising to you.

and those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith - we will join with them their descendants, and we will not deprive them of anything of their deeds. every person, for what he earned, is retained.

abu hurairah, may allah be pleased with him, narrated that the messenger of allah (ﷺ) said:"when a person dies, his deeds are cut off except for three: continuing charity, knowledge that others benefited from, and a righteous son who supplicates for him

Adab & method

This gathers the principles of upbringing from revelation; the how — ages, methods, screens, schooling — shifts with each child and time, and the platform's parenting guides and tools are for that practical layer. Two threads run through all of it: that the child is a trust, not the parent's project, and that no method replaces the parent's own example and duʿā. Raise them for Allah, and leave their guidance, in the end, to the One who guides hearts.
