if you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, we will remove from you your lesser sins and admit you to a noble entrance [into paradise].
Major Sins — and the Door of Repentance
What the Qur'ān and the authentic Sunnah name as the gravest sins — and the mercy that outweighs them all for the one who returns.
Note: the Qur’ān’s Arabic is never machine-narrated — only the Urdu translation is spoken. Hadith are narrated as meaning (mafhūm), not verbatim. Tap a reference for the original.
1.What Makes a Sin 'Major'
A major sin (kabīra) is one the texts single out with a threat of the Fire, a curse, Allah's anger, a fixed legal penalty, or exclusion from faith. The scholars did not agree on a single count; what they agree on is that these are the sins the revelation itself marks as grave.
those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. indeed, your lord is vast in forgiveness. he was most knowing of you when he produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. so do not claim yourselves to be pure; he is most knowing of who fears him.
and those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, and when they are angry, they forgive,
narrated abu huraira:allah's messenger (ﷺ) said, "avoid the mubiqat, i.e., shirk and witchcraft
narrated ghailan:anas said "you people do (bad) deeds (commit sins) which seem in your eyes as tiny (minute) than hair while we used to consider those (very deeds) during the life-time of the prophet (ﷺ) as destructive sins
it is reported on the authority of abu huraira that the messenger of allah (ﷺ) observed:avoid the seven noxious things. it was said (by the hearers): what are they, messenger of allah? he (the holy prophet) replied: associating anything with allah, magic, killing of one whom god has declared inviolate without a just cause, consuming the property of an orphan, and consuming of usury, turning back when the army advances, and slandering chaste women who are believers, but unwary
it was narrated from abu hurairah that the messenger of allah said:"avoid the seven sins that doom one to hell." it was said: "o messenger of allah, what are they?" he said: "associating others with allah (shirk), magic, killing a soul whom allah has forbidden killing, except in cases dictated by islamic law, consuming riba, consuming the property of orphans, fleeing on the day of the march (to battlefield), and slandering chaste women who never even think of anything touching their chastity and are good believers
narrated abu hurairah: the messenger of allah (ﷺ) as saying: refrain from seven (characteristics) which cause destruction. he was asked: what are they, messenger of allah ? he replied: to assign partner to allah, magic, to kill a soul (man) which is prohibited by allah except for which is due, to take usury, to consume the property of an orphan, to retreat on the day of the battle, and to slander chaste women, indiscreet but believing. abu dawud said: the name abu al-ghaith is salim client of ibn muti
Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA) : Allah's Apostle (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, "Avoid the Mubiqat, i.e., shirk and witchcraft."
Narrated Ghailan (RA) : Anas said "You people do (bad) deeds (commit sins) which seem in your eyes as tiny (minute) than hair while we used to consider those (very deeds) during the life-time of the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) as destructive sins."
2.The Greatest Sin — Shirk
The Qur'ān twice states that Allah does not forgive that a partner be set up with Him, while He forgives anything less than that for whom He wills. Every prophet's first call was to abandon it.
indeed, allah does not forgive association with him, but he forgives what is less than that for whom he wills. and he who associates others with allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.
indeed, allah does not forgive association with him, but he forgives what is less than that for whom he wills. and he who associates others with allah has certainly gone far astray.
and [mention, o muhammad], when luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, "o my son, do not associate [anything] with allah. indeed, association [with him] is great injustice."
they have certainly disbelieved who say, "allah is the messiah, the son of mary" while the messiah has said, "o children of israel, worship allah, my lord and your lord." indeed, he who associates others with allah - allah has forbidden him paradise, and his refuge is the fire. and there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.
it was narrated that 'ubaidullah bin abi bakr said:"i heard anas say: 'the messenger of allah [saw] said: the major sins are: associating others with allah (shirk), disobeying one's parents, killing a soul (murder) and speaking falsely
it was narrated that 'ubaidullah bin abi bakr said:"i heard ana's say: 'the messenger of allah said: 'the major sins are; associating others with allah (shirk), disobeying one's parents, killing a soul (murder) and speaking falsely
narrated abu huraira:allah's messenger (ﷺ) said, "avoid the mubiqat, i.e., shirk and witchcraft
AUTO 643 - حديث "اجتنبوا الموبقات: الشرك بالله"
قلنا: الشرك بالله، والزنا، والسرقة، وشرب الخمر.
3.Sorcery
Sorcery is named directly after shirk in the ḥadīth of the seven destroyers; the Qur'ān ties it to disbelief and to harm taught to people.
and they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of solomon. it was not solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at babylon, harut and marut. but the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, "we are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." and [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. but they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of allah. and the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. but the children of israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the hereafter any share. and wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.
وقال {ما جئتم به السحر} يقول: "الذي جئتم به السحر" وقال بعضهم (آلسحر) بالاستفهام.
بنسبة السحر إليه، وقيل: كفروا باستخراج السحر.
4.Abandoning the Prayer
The Qur'ān warns of a generation who 'wasted the prayer and followed desires'; the ḥadīth calls prayer the covenant between us and them. (Scholars differ on the ruling on one who abandons it while affirming its obligation — the texts here state the gravity, not a verdict on individuals.)
but there came after them successors who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil -
so woe to those who pray
[but] who are heedless of their prayer -
[and asking them], "what put you into saqar?"
they will say, "we were not of those who prayed,
it is narrated on the authority of jabir that he heard the apostle (may peace and blessings be upon him) saying. verily between man and between polytheism and unbelief is the negligence of prayer
‘abdullah bin buraidah narrated that his father said:“the messenger of allah (ﷺ) said: ‘the covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed kufr.’”
it was narrated from 'abdullah bin buraidah that his father said:"the messenger of allah (ﷺ) said: 'the covenant that stands between us and them is the salah; whoever abandons it, he has committed disbelief
it is narrated on the authority of abu zubair that he heard jabir b. 'abdullah saying. i heard the messenger of allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) observing this:between man and polytheism and unbelief is the abandonment of salat
5.Killing a Soul
The Qur'ān equates the unjust killing of one soul with killing all people, and warns of eternal wrath for the deliberate murder of a believer.
but whoever kills a believer intentionally - his recompense is hell, wherein he will abide eternally, and allah has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment.
because of that, we decreed upon the children of israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. and whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. and our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.
and those who do not invoke with allah another deity or kill the soul which allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. and whoever should do that will meet a penalty.
it was narrated that 'abdullah said:"the first matter concerning which scores will be settled among the people will be bloodshed
it was narrated from 'abdullah that:the messenger of allah [saw] said: "the first matter concerning which scores will be settled among the people on the day of resurrection will be bloodshed
yahya related to me from malik from abu'z zubayr al-makki that abu maiz al-aslami abdullah ibn sufyan told him that once, when he was sitting with abdullah ibn umar, a woman came to ask him for an opinion. she said, "i set out intending to do tawaf of the house, but then, when i got to the gate of the mosque, i started bleeding, so i went back until it had left me. then i set out again, and then, when i got to the gate of the mosque, i started bleeding, so i went back until it had left me. then i set off again, and then, when i got to the gate of the mosque, i started bleeding." abdullah ibn umar said, "that is only an impulse from shaytan. do ghusl, then bind your private parts with a cloth and do tawaf
it was narrated that 'abdullah said:"the messenger of allah [saw] said: 'the first matter concerning which judgment will be passed among the people will be bloodshed
6.Usury (Ribā)
'If you do not [give it up], then be informed of a war from Allah and His Messenger.' The Sunnah curses the one who consumes it, pays it, records it, and witnesses it.
those who consume interest cannot stand [on the day of resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by satan into insanity. that is because they say, "trade is [just] like interest." but allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. so whoever has received an admonition from his lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with allah. but whoever returns to [dealing in interest or usury] - those are the companions of the fire; they will abide eternally therein.
o you who have believed, fear allah and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers.
and if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from allah and his messenger. but if you repent, you may have your principal - [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged.
narrated abdullah ibn mas'ud: the messenger of allah (ﷺ) cursed the one who accepted usury, the one who paid it, the witness to it, and the one who recorded it
it was narrated from husain, mughirah, and ibn 'awn, from ash-sh'abi, from al-harith, from 'ali, that:the messenger of allah [saw] cursed the one who consumes riba, the one who pays it, the one who writes it down, and the one who withholds sadaqah (zakah). and he used to forbid wailing (in mourning for the dead)
it was narrated that from 'ata' bin as-sa'ib, from ash-sha'bi who said:"the messenger of allah [saw] cursed the one who consumes riba, the one who pays it, the one who witnesses it and the one who writes it down; the woman who does tattoos and the woman who has that done; and forbade wailing (in mourning), but he did not say that its doer is cursed
jabir said that allah's messenger (ﷺ) cursed the accepter of interest and its payer, and one who records it, and the two witnesses, and he said:they are all equal
Bushair bin Yasir reported on the authority of some of the Companions of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon hinn) from among the members of his family that he forbade (the direct exchange of a commodity having different qualities) but with the change that Ishaq and Ibn al-Muthanna used the word Zabn in place ot Riba and Ibn Abu 'Umar used the word Riba (interest).
Narrated Ibn Abbas (RA) : The last Verse (in the Qur'an) revealed to the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) was the Verse dealing with usury (i.e. Riba).
وأما قوله: )نهى عن أكل الربا، وعن الشهادة على الربا، وعن كتابة الربا، وعن إطعام الربا، ولعن آكل الربا، ومواكله، وكاتبه، وشاهده(.
116 آكل الربا
7.Devouring the Orphan's Wealth
'Those who consume the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming into their bellies fire.' It is counted among the seven destroyers.
indeed, those who devour the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming into their bellies fire. and they will be burned in a blaze.
and do not approach the orphan's property except in a way that is best until he reaches maturity. and give full measure and weight in justice. we do not charge any soul except [with that within] its capacity. and when you testify, be just, even if [it concerns] a near relative. and the covenant of allah fulfill. this has he instructed you that you may remember.
it was narrated that ibn 'abbas said:"when these verses were revealed - 'and come not near to the orphan's property, except to improve it,' and 'verily, those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans' - the people avoided the property and food of the orphans. that caused hardship to the muslims and they complained about that to the prophet. then allah revealed: 'and they ask you concerning orphans. say: the best thing is to work honestly in their property, and if you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers. and allah knows him who means mischief (e.g. to swallow their property) from him who means good (e.g. to save their property). and if allah had wished, he could have put you into difficulties
narrated abdullah ibn abbas: when allah, most high, revealed the verses: "come not nigh to the orphan's property except to improve it". and "those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans", everyone who had an orphan with him went and separated his food from his (orphan's) food, and his drink from his drink, and began to detain the remaining food which he (the orphan) himself ate or spoiled. this fell heavy on them, and they mentioned this to the messenger of allah (ﷺ). so allah, most high, revealed the verse: "they ask thee concerning orphans. say: the best thing to do is what is for their good; if ye mix their affairs with yours, they are your brethren." then they mixed their food with his food and their drink with his drink
hisham reported on the authority of his father that 'a'isha said in connection with his (allah's) words:" and whoever is poor let him take reasonably (out of it)" that it was revealed in connection with the custodian of the property of an orphan, who is in charge of her and looks after her; in case he is poor, he is allowed to eat out of that
Hisham reported on the authority of his father that 'A'isha said in connection with His (Allah's) words: "And whoever is poor let him take reasonably (out of it)" that it was revealed in connection with the custodian of the property of an orphan, who is in charge of her and looks after her; In case he is poor, he is allowed to eat out of that.
It is reported on the authority of Abu Hurairah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) observed: Avoid the seven noxious things. It was said (by the hearers): What are they, Messenger of Allah? (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Associating anything with Allah, magic, killing of one whom God has declared inviolate without a just cause, consuming the property of an orphan, and consuming of usury, turning back when the army advances, and slandering chaste women who are believers, but unwary.
وكذلك أكل مال اليتيم يجوز للضرورة بل يجب بها وبالإكراه بالقتل
8.Unlawful Intercourse (Zinā)
'Do not approach unlawful intercourse — indeed it is an immorality and an evil way.' The ḥadīth teaches that faith departs a person at the moment of the act.
and do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
the [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse - lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of allah, if you should believe in allah and the last day. and let a group of the believers witness their punishment.
and those who do not invoke with allah another deity or kill the soul which allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. and whoever should do that will meet a penalty.
muhammad b. rafi', abdur-razzaq, sufyan, a'mash narrated this hadith like one narrated by shu'ba, on the authority of abu huraira tracing, it (right to the holy prophet)
it was narrated from abu hurairah that the messenger of allah said:"no one who commits zina is a believer at the moment when he is committing zina; no one who steals is a believe at the moment when he is stealing; no one who drinks wine is a believer at the moment when he is drinking it; and no robber is a believer at the moment when he is robbing and the people are looking on
it was narrated that abu hurairah said:"the messenger of allah [saw] said: 'the adulterer is not a believer at the moment when he is committing adultery, and the wine drinker is not a believer at the moment when he is drinking wine, and the thief is not a believer at the moment when he is stealing, and the robber is not a believer at the moment when he is robbing and people are looking on
Muhammad bin Rafi', Abdur-Razzaq, Sufyan, A'mash narrated this hadith like one narrated by Shu'bah, on the authority of Abu Hurairah (RA) tracing, it (right to the Holy Prophet).
Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA) : The Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, "The one who commits an illegal sexual intercourse is not a believer at the time of committing illegal sexual intercourse and a thief is not a believer at the time of committing theft and a drinker of alcoholic drink is not a believer at the time of drinking. Yet, (the gate of) repentance is open thereafter."
9.Slandering Chaste Believers
The Qur'ān declares those who accuse chaste, unaware believing women cursed in this world and the Hereafter, with a great punishment.
indeed, those who [falsely] accuse chaste, unaware and believing women are cursed in this world and the hereafter; and they will have a great punishment
and those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses - lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. and those are the defiantly disobedient,
10.Fleeing on the Day of Battle
Turning one's back on the day the two armies meet — except as a tactic or to rejoin a company — draws Allah's wrath in the Qur'ān and is named among the seven destroyers.
o you who have believed, when you meet those who disbelieve advancing [for battle], do not turn to them your backs [in flight].
and whoever turns his back to them on such a day, unless swerving [as a strategy] for war or joining [another] company, has certainly returned with anger [upon him] from allah, and his refuge is hell - and wretched is the destination.
narrated ibn 'umar: "the messenger of allah sent us on a military expedition, and the people turned to escape. so we arrived in al-madinah and concealed ourselves in it and we said: 'we are ruined.' then we went to the messenger of allah (ﷺ) and we said: 'o messenger of allah! we are those who fled.' he said: 'rather you are al-'akkarun (those who are regrouping) and i am your reinforcement. [abu 'eisa said:] this hadith is hasan gharib. we do not know of it except as a narration of yazid bin abi ziyad. and the meaning of his saying: "the people turned to escape" is that they fled from the fighting. as for the meaning of his saying: "rather you are al-'akkarun," the 'akkar is the one who flees to his imam in order that he may help him, it does not mean fleeing from the advancing army
وواحدة في الرجلين: الفرار من الزحف.
11.Disobedience to Parents
The Qur'ān joins the command to worship Allah alone with kindness to parents, forbidding even a word of disdain; the ḥadīth lists 'uqūq al-wālidayn among the greatest of the major sins.
and your lord has decreed that you not worship except him, and to parents, good treatment. whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.
and lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "my lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when i was] small."
and we have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. his mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. be grateful to me and to your parents; to me is the [final] destination.
narrated `abdullah bin `amr:a bedouin came to the prophet (ﷺ) and said, "o allah's messenger (ﷺ)! what are the biggest sins?: the prophet (ﷺ) said, "to join others in worship with allah." the bedouin said, "what is next?" the prophet (ﷺ) said, "to be undutiful to one's parents." the bedouin said "what is next?" the prophet (ﷺ) said "to take an oath 'al-ghamus." the bedouin said, "what is an oath 'al-ghamus'?" the prophet (ﷺ) said, "the false oath through which one deprives a muslim of his property (unjustly)
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr (RA) (RA) : A bedouin came to the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) and said, "O Allah's Apostle (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) ! What are the biggest sins?: The Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, "To join others in worship with Allah." The bedouin said, "What is next?" The Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, "To be undutiful to one's parents." The bedouin said "What is next?" The Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said "To take an oath 'Al-Ghamus." The bedouin said, "What is an oath 'Al-Ghamus'?" The Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, "The false oath through which one deprives a Muslim of his property (unjustly)."
وهي عقوق الوالدين.
إثم عقوق الوالدين
12.Severing the Ties of Kinship
The Qur'ān curses those who sever what Allah ordered to be joined; the ḥadīth states plainly that the one who cuts off kin will not enter Paradise.
but those who break the covenant of allah after contracting it and sever that which allah has ordered to be joined and spread corruption on earth - for them is the curse, and they will have the worst home.
so would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship?
those [who do so] are the ones that allah has cursed, so he deafened them and blinded their vision.
Narrated Jubair bin Mut'im (RA) : That he heard the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) saying, "The person who severs the bond of kinship will not enter Paradise."
Jubair bin Mut'im reported that his father narrated to him that Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said: The severer of the tie of kinship would not get into Paradise.
13.False Witness & Lying
Warning of the greatest sins, the Prophet ﷺ sat up from reclining and repeated 'and false speech, and false witness' until the Companions wished he would stop, so heavy was it upon him.
and [they are] those who do not testify to falsehood, and when they pass near ill speech, they pass by with dignity.
that [has been commanded], and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of allah - it is best for him in the sight of his lord. and permitted to you are the grazing livestock, except what is recited to you. so avoid the uncleanliness of idols and avoid false statement,
and on the day of resurrection you will see those who lied about allah [with] their faces blackened. is there not in hell a residence for the arrogant?
narrated abu bakra:allah's messenger (ﷺ) said thrice, "shall i not inform you of the biggest of the great sins?" we said, "yes, o allah's messenger (ﷺ)" he said, "to join partners in worship with allah: to be undutiful to one's parents." the prophet (ﷺ) sat up after he had been reclining and added, "and i warn you against giving forged statement and a false witness; i warn you against giving a forged statement and a false witness." the prophet kept on saying that warning till we thought that he would not stop
narrated bishr:as above (no. 290) adding: the prophet (ﷺ) was reclining (leaning) and then he sat up saying, "and i warn you against giving a false statement." and he kept on saying that warning so much so that we said, "would that he had stopped
narrated abu bakra:the prophet (ﷺ) said thrice, "should i inform you about the greatest of the great sins?" they said, "yes, o allah's messenger (ﷺ)!" he said, "to join others in worship with allah and to be undutiful to one's parents." the prophet (ﷺ) then sat up after he had been reclining (on a pillow) and said, "and i warn you against giving a false witness, and he kept on saying that warning till we thought he would not stop. (see hadith no. 7, vol)
Narrated Anas bin Malik (RA): Allah's Apostle (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) mentioned the greatest sins or he was asked about the greatest sins. He said, "To join partners in worship with Allah; to kill a soul which Allah has forbidden to kill; and to be undutiful or unkind to one's parents." The Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) added, "Shall I inform you of the biggest of the great sins? That is the forged statement or the false witness." Shu'ba (the sub-narrator) states that most probably the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, "the false witness."
Ubaidullah bin Abu Bakr (RA) said: I heard Anas bin Malik (RA) saying: The Messenger of Allah (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) talked about the major sins, or he was asked about the major sins. Upon this he observed: Associating anyone with Allah, killing of a person, disobedience to parents. He (the Holy Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) further) said: Should I not inform you about the gravest of the major sins, and (in this connection) observed: False utterance or false testimony. Shu'bah said. It was most probably" false testimony".
14.Sins of the Tongue — Backbiting & Talebearing
The Qur'ān likens backbiting to eating the flesh of one's dead brother; the ḥadīth states the talebearer (nammām) will not enter Paradise.
o you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. indeed, some assumption is sin. and do not spy or backbite each other. would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? you would detest it. and fear allah; indeed, allah is accepting of repentance and merciful.
woe to every scorner and mocker
[and] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -
it is reported from hudhaifa that news reached him (the holy prophet) that a certain man carried tales. upon this hudhaifa remarked:i heard allah's messenger (ﷺ) saying: the tale-bearer shall not enter paradise
hammam bin al-harith said:"aman passed by hudhaifah bin al-yaman and it was said to him: "this person conveys news about the people to the leaders.' so hudaifah said: 'the messenger of allah said: 'the qatat shall not enter paradise.'" (sahih)sufyan said: "the qatat is the nammam
Narrated Jabir bin ' Abdullah (RA) : Allah's Apostle (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, "When anyone of you is away from his house for a long time, he should not return to his family at night."
It is reported from Hudhaifa that news reached him (the Holy Prophet) that a certain man carried tales. Upon this Hudhaifa remarked: I heard Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) saying: The tale-bearer shall not enter Paradise.
15.The Door That Never Closes — Repentance
'Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah — indeed He forgives all sins.' Allah spreads His hand by night to accept the repentance of the sinner of the day, and by day for the sinner of the night.
say, "o my servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of allah. indeed, allah forgives all sins. indeed, it is he who is the forgiving, the merciful."
and return [in repentance] to your lord and submit to him before the punishment comes upon you; then you will not be helped.
and whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of allah will find allah forgiving and merciful.
and it is he who accepts repentance from his servants and pardons misdeeds, and he knows what you do.
it was narrated that ibn ‘umar said:“when ‘abdullah bin ubayy died, his son came to the prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘o messenger of allah, give me your shirt so that i may shroud him in it.’ the messenger of allah (ﷺ) said: ‘notify me when he is ready (i.e., when he has been washed and shrouded).’ when the prophet (ﷺ) wanted to offer the funeral prayer for him: ‘you should not do that.’ the prophet (ﷺ) offered the funeral prayer for him, and the prophet (ﷺ) said to him: ‘i have been given two choices: “...ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites) or ask not forgiveness for them...’” [9:80] then allah revealed: ‘and never pray (the funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave.’” [9:]
it was narrated from abu sa'eed that:the messenger of allah said: "if you see a man frequenting the mosques, then bear witness to his faith. allah says: 'the mosques of allah shall be maintained only by those who believe in allah and the last day. [at-taubah:]
abu musa reported allah's messenger (ﷺ) as saying that allah, the exalted and glorious, stretches out his hand during the night so that the people may repent for the fault committed from dawn till dusk and he stretches out his hand during the day so that the people may repent for the fault committed from dusk to dawn. (he would accept repentance) before the sun rises in the west (before the day of resurrection). a hadith like this has been narrated on the authority of shu'ba with the same chain of transmitters
abu musa reported allah's messenger (ﷺ) as saying that allah, the exalted and glorious, stretches out his hand during the night so that the people may repent for the fault committed from dawn till dusk and he stretches out his hand during the day so that the people may repent for the fault committed from dusk to dawn. (he would accept repentance) before the sun rises in the west (before the day of resurrection). a hadith like this has been narrated on the authority of shu'ba with the same chain of transmitters
it was narrated that abu hurairah said:"the messenger of allah said: 'the (following) was revealed about the people of quba': 'in it (the mosque) are men who love to clean and purify themselves. and allah loves those who make themselves clean and pure.'" he said: 'they used to clean themselves with water (after urinating), and this verse was revealed concerning them
Abu Mu'sa reported Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, Stretches out His Hand during the night so that the people repent for the fault committed from dawn till dusk and He stretches out His Hand during the day so that the people may repent for the fault committed from dusk to dawn. (He would accept repentance) before the sun rises in the west (before the Day of Resurrection).
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Ibn Ghazwan (and the words are): "I heard Abu'l-Qasim (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) as the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) of repentance."
16.The Conditions of a True Repentance
The Qur'ān calls for a 'sincere repentance' (tawba naṣūḥ); the ḥadīth names regret its very heart, and Allah accepts it so long as the soul has not reached the throat and the sun has not risen from the west.
o you who have believed, repent to allah with sincere repentance. perhaps your lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow [on] the day when allah will not disgrace the prophet and those who believed with him. their light will proceed before them and on their right; they will say, "our lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. indeed, you are over all things competent."
and those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except allah? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.
and tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. and let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. and turn to allah in repentance, all of you, o believers, that you might succeed.
abu huraira reported allah's messenger (ﷺ) as say- ing:he who seeks repentance (from the lord) before the rising of the sun from the west (before the day of resurrection), allah turns to him with mercy
17.Between Hope and Fear — Despair Is Itself Forbidden
None despairs of Allah's mercy but a disbelieving people. The believer walks between fear that keeps him from sin and hope that keeps him from despair — and dies thinking well of his Lord.
o my sons, go and find out about joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from allah. indeed, no one despairs of relief from allah except the disbelieving people."
he said, "and who despairs of the mercy of his lord except for those astray?"
say, "o my servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of allah. indeed, allah forgives all sins. indeed, it is he who is the forgiving, the merciful."
the forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, owner of abundance. there is no deity except him; to him is the destination.
jabir b. 'abdullah al-ansari reported:i heard allah's messenger (ﷺ) say three days before his death: none of you should die but hoping only good from allah, the exalted and glorious
it was narrated that abu hurairah said:"the messenger of allah said: 'your lord wrote for himself with his own hand before he created the creation: "my mercy precedes my wrath
narrated abu huraira:the prophet (ﷺ) said, "when allah had finished his creation, he wrote over his throne: 'my mercy preceded my anger
Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA) : The Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, "When Allah had finished His creation, He wrote over his Throne: 'My Mercy preceded My Anger.'
Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA) : Allah's Apostle (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, "When Allah created the creations, He wrote with Him on His Throne: 'My Mercy has preceded My Anger."

Adab & method
This page compiles what revelation names as grave — it is not a court. It passes no verdict on any named person, and it deliberately does not tally 'how many' major sins there are, since the salaf themselves differed. Where the ruling on an act is contested (as with abandoning prayer), the gravity is stated and the disagreement noted, not resolved. The heaviest verse here is the lightest in effect: the door of repentance. No sin recounted above is meant to crush hope — every one is placed beside the mercy that erases it for the one who turns back.
