and indeed, you are of a great moral character.
Character — Virtues to Grow, Vices to Uproot
The Prophet ﷺ said he was sent to perfect noble character. What the Qur'ān and Sunnah praise as beauty of the soul — and what they warn against as its disease.
1.The Weight of Good Character
Allah praised His Prophet ﷺ for nothing greater than his character — 'Indeed you are of a magnificent character.' On the Day of Judgement nothing placed on the believer's scale is heavier than good character.
so by mercy from allah, [o muhammad], you were lenient with them. and if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. so pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. and when you have decided, then rely upon allah. indeed, allah loves those who rely [upon him].
narrated abuddarda': the prophet (ﷺ) said: there is nothing heavier than good character put in the scale of a believer on the day of resurrection. abu al-walid said: i heard 'ata al-kaikharani say: abu dawud said: his name is 'ata b. ya'qub. he is the maternal uncle of ibrahim b. nafi'. he is called kaikharani or kukharani
abu ad-dardh narrated that the messenger of allah said:"nothing is placed on the scale that is heavier than good character. indeed the person with good character will have attained the rank of the person of fasting and prayer
abu wahb narrated that :'abdullah bin al-mubarak explained good character, and then he said: "it is a smiling face, doing one's best in good, and refraining from harm
nawwas b. sam'an al-ansari reported:i asked allah's messenger (ﷺ) about virtue and vice. he said: virtue is a kind disposition and vice is what rankles in your heart and that you disapprove that people should come to know of it
an-nawas bin sama'an narrated that a man came asking the messenger of allah (s.a.w) about righteousness and sin. so the prophet (s.a.w) said:"righteouness is good behaviour, and sin is what fluctuates in your chest, and you would hate that the people discovered it about you
Nawwas bin Sim'an al-Ansiri reported: I asked Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) about virtue and vice. He said: Virtue is a kind disposition and vice is what rankles in your heart and that you disapprove that people should come to know of it.
Nawwis bin Sim'in reported: I stayed with Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) for one year. What obstructed me to migrate was (nothing) but (persistent) inquiries from him (about Islam). (It was a common observation) that when anyone of us migrated (to Madinah) he ceased to ask (too many questions) from Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) . So I asked him about virtue and vice. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said: Virtue is a kind disposition and vice is what rankles in your mind and that you disapprove of its being known to the people.

2.Truthfulness
'Be with the truthful.' The Prophet ﷺ taught that a man keeps telling the truth until he is written with Allah as a ṣiddīq.
o you who have believed, fear allah and be with those who are true.
o you who have believed, fear allah and speak words of appropriate justice.
indeed, the muslim men and muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember allah often and the women who do so - for them allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.
abdullah reported allah's messenger (ﷺ) as saying:it is obligatory for you to tell the truth, for truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to paradise, and the man who continues to speak the truth and endeavours to tell the truth is eventually recorded as truthful with allah, and beware of telling of a lie for telling of a lie leads to obscenity and obscenity leads to hell-fire, and the person who keeps telling lies and endeavours to tell a lie is recorded as a liar with allah
malik related to me that he heard that abdullah ibn masud used to say, "you must tell the truth. truthfulness leads to right action. right action leads to the garden. beware of lying. lying leads to corruption, and corruption leads to the fire. don't you see that it is said, 'he speaks the truth and acts rightly,' and, 'he lies and is corrupt
abdullah bin mas'ud narrated that the messenger of allah said:"abide by truthfulness. for indeed truthfulness leads to righteousness. and indeed righteousness leads to paradise. a man continues telling the truth and trying hard to tell the truth until he is recorded with allah as a truthful person. refrain from falsehood. for indeed falsehood leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the fire. a slave (of allah) continues lying and trying hard to lie, until he is recorded with allah as a liar

ومقام الصدق جامع للإخلاص والعزم فباجتماعهما يصح له مقام الصدق
3.Humility
The servants of the Most Merciful walk upon the earth in gentleness; and the Prophet ﷺ said no one humbles himself for Allah except that Allah raises him.
and the servants of the most merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace,
and do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. indeed, allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
it was narrated from ‘asim bin muhammad bin zaid bin ‘abdullah, from his father, that his grandfather said:“the messenger of allah (ﷺ) forbade us to drink while (lying) on our bellies, lapping up water, and he forbade us to drink from one hand only. he said: ‘none of you should lap up water as a dog does, and he should not drink water from one hand as the people with whom allah is angry do, and he should not drink from a vessel at night without stirring it first, unless the vessel was covered. whoever drinks from his hand when he is able to drink from a vessel, with the intention of humility, allah will record good deeds equivalent to the number of fingers for him. it (i.e., the hand) is the vessel of ‘eisa bin maryam, (as) when he threw away the cup and said: ‘ugh! that belongs to this world.’”
بادي التواضع للأقوام من كرم إن التواضع أقصى غاية الشرف
بادى التواضع للزوار من كرم ... أن التواضع أقصى غاية الشرف
4.Patience
'The patient will be given their reward without measure.' The Prophet ﷺ called patience a light, and said no gift is better or wider than patience.
o you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. indeed, allah is with the patient.
say, "o my servants who have believed, fear your lord. for those who do good in this world is good, and the earth of allah is spacious. indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account."
o you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear allah that you may be successful.

5.Mercy and Compassion
The Prophet ﷺ was sent as a mercy to the worlds. 'The merciful are shown mercy by the Most Merciful — be merciful to those on earth, and the One above the heaven will be merciful to you.'
and we have not sent you, [o muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.
and then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
muhammad is the messenger of allah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. you see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty from allah and [his] pleasure. their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. that is their description in the torah. and their description in the gospel is as a plant which produces its offshoots and strengthens them so they grow firm and stand upon their stalks, delighting the sowers - so that allah may enrage by them the disbelievers. allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward.
amr bin shu'aib narrated that his father, from his grandfather, who said that the messenger of allah said:'he is not one of us who does not have mercy upon our young, nor knows the honor of our elders
narrated abdullah ibn amr ibn al-'as: the prophet (ﷺ) said: the compassionate one has mercy on those who are merciful. if you show mercy to those who are on the earth, he who is in the heaven will show mercy to you. musaddad did not say: the client of 'adb allah b. 'amr. he said: the prophet (ﷺ) said
narrated jarir bin `abdullah:the prophet (ﷺ) said, "he who is not merciful to others, will not be treated mercifully
abdullah bin 'amr narrated that the messenger of allah said:"the merciful are shown mercy by ar-rahman. be merciful on the earth, and you will be shown mercy from who is above the heavens. the womb is named after ar-rahman, so whoever connects it, allah connects him, and whoever severs it, allah severs him
Narrated Jarir bin ' Abdullah (RA) : The Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, "He who is not merciful to others, will not be treated mercifully.
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that al-Aqra' bin Habis saw Allah's Apostle (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) kissing Hasan. He said: I have ten children, but I have never kissed any one of them, whereupon Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said: He who does not show mercy (towards his children), no mercy would be shown to him.
6.Generosity
Those who prefer others over themselves though poverty is theirs — those are the successful. The Prophet ﷺ said charity never decreases wealth, and the upper hand is better than the lower.
who spend [in the cause of allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and allah loves the doers of good;
the example of those who spend their wealth in the way of allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. and allah multiplies [his reward] for whom he wills. and allah is all-encompassing and knowing.
and spend [in the way of allah] from what we have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "my lord, if only you would delay me for a brief term so i would give charity and be among the righteous."
abu hurairah narrated that the prophet said:"generosity is close to allah, close to paradise, close to the people and far from the fire. stinginess is far from allah, far from paradise, far from the people and close to the fire. the ignorant generous person, is more beloved to allah than the worshiping stingy person
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) as saying: Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth and the servant who forgives Allah adds to his respect, and the one who shows humility Allah elevates him in the estimation (of the people).
السخاء والجود
7.Forbearance and Pardon
Praised are those who restrain anger and pardon people. The Prophet ﷺ said pardon only increases a servant in honour, and the strong one is he who controls himself.
take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.
and the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from allah. indeed, he does not like wrongdoers.
and let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives and the needy and the emigrants for the cause of allah, and let them pardon and overlook. would you not like that allah should forgive you? and allah is forgiving and merciful.
Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA) : Allah's Apostle (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, "The strong is not the one who overcomes the people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in anger."
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) as saying: The strong-man is not one who wrestles well but the strong man is one who controls himself when he is in a fit of rage.

باب المثل في الحلم والصبر على كظم الغيظ.
8.Modesty (Ḥayāʾ)
'Modesty is a branch of faith.' The Prophet ﷺ said modesty brings nothing but good — and that among the words of the earliest prophethood people still repeat is: 'If you feel no shame, do as you wish.'
tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. that is purer for them. indeed, allah is acquainted with what they do.
and tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. and let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. and turn to allah in repentance, all of you, o believers, that you might succeed.
it is narrated on the authority of 'imran b. husain that the prophet (may peace and blessings be upon him) said:modesty brings forth nothing but goodness. bushair b. ka'b said: it is recorded in the books of wisdom, there lies sobriety in it and calmness of mind in it, imran said: i am narrating to you the tradition of the messenger of allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) and you talk of your books
narrated abu as-sawar al-adawi:`imran bin husain said: the prophet (ﷺ) said, "haya' (pious shyness from committing religeous indiscretions) does not bring anything except good." thereupon bashir bin ka`b said, 'it is written in the wisdom paper: haya' leads to solemnity; haya' leads to tranquility (peace of mind)." `imran said to him, "i am narrating to you the saying of allah's messenger (ﷺ) and you are speaking about your paper (wisdom book)?
وفي رواية لمسلم:"الحياء خير كله" أو قال:"الحياء كله خير ".
9.Pride — the First Sin
'Do not turn your cheek from people in scorn.' The Prophet ﷺ said none with an atom's weight of pride enters Paradise, and defined pride as rejecting the truth and belittling people.
and do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. indeed, allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
assuredly, allah knows what they conceal and what they declare. indeed, he does not like the arrogant.
i will turn away from my signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right; and if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. and if they see the way of consciousness, they will not adopt it as a way; but if they see the way of error, they will adopt it as a way. that is because they have denied our signs and they were heedless of them.
it is narrated on the authority of abdullah b. mas'ud that the messenger of allah (ﷺ), observed:he who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride shall not enter paradise. a person (amongst his hearers) said: verily a person loves that his dress should be fine, and his shoes should be fine. he (the holy prophet) remarked: verily, allah is graceful and he loves grace. pride is disdaining the truth (out of self-conceit) and contempt for the people
10.Envy
We seek refuge from the evil of an envier when he envies. The Prophet ﷺ warned: beware of envy, for envy consumes good deeds as fire consumes wood.
or do they envy people for what allah has given them of his bounty? but we had already given the family of abraham the scripture and wisdom and conferred upon them a great kingdom.
and from the evil of an envier when he envies."
narrated abuhurayrah: the prophet (ﷺ) said: avoid envy, for envy devours good deeds just as fire devours fuel or (he said) "grass
it was narrated from salim that his father said:“the messenger of allah (ﷺ) said: ‘there is no envy except in two cases. a man to whom allah has given (knowledge of) the qur’an, so he recites it night and day, and a man to whom allah has given wealth, so he spends it night and day.’”
it was narrated from ‘abdullah bin mas’ud that the messenger of allah (ﷺ) said:“there is no (permissible) envy except in two cases: a man whom allah has given wealth and caused him to dispose of it in a proper manner, and a man to whom allah has given wisdom, and he acts in accordance with it and teaches it (to others).”

11.Anger
A man asked the Prophet ﷺ for counsel; he said, 'Do not become angry,' and repeated it. He taught the strong is the one who masters himself when angry, and to make wuḍūʾ when anger flares.
who spend [in the cause of allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and allah loves the doers of good;
and those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, and when they are angry, they forgive,
on the authority of abu hurayrah (may allah be pleased with him): a man said to the prophet (peace and blessings of allah be upon him), “counsel me,” so he (peace and blessings of allah be upon him) said, “do not become angry.” the man repeated [his request for counsel] several times, and [each time] he (peace and blessings of allah be upon him) said, “do not become angry.” [al-bukhari]
narrated abu huraira:a man said to the prophet (ﷺ) , "advise me! "the prophet (ﷺ) said, "do not become angry and furious." the man asked (the same) again and again, and the prophet (ﷺ) said in each case, "do not become angry and furious
abu hurairah narrated that a man came to the messenger of allah and said:"teach me something that is not too much for me so that, perhaps, i may abide by it." he (s.a.w) said: "do not get angry." he repeated that (the request) a number of times, each time he replied: 'do not get angry
malik related to me from ibn shihab from humayd ibn abd ar-rahman ibn awf that a man came to the messenger of allah, may allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, "messenger of allah, teach me some words which i can live by. do not make them too much for me, lest i forget." the messenger of allah, may allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "do not be angry
Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA) : A man said to the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) , "Advise me! "The Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, "Do not become angry and furious." The man asked (the same) again and again, and the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said in each case, "Do not become angry and furious."
'Ali bin Husain reported that Miswar bin Makhramah informed him that ' Ali Ibn Abi Talib (RA) sent the proposal of marriage to the daughter of Abu Jahl as he had Fatima, the daughter of Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) , (as his wife). When Fatima heard about it, she came to Allah's Apostle (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) and said: The people say that you never feel angry on account of your daughters and now 'Ali is going to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl. Makhramah said: Thereupon Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) rose up and I heard him reciting Tashahhud and say: Now to the point. I gave a daughter of mine (Zainab) to Abu'l-'As bin Rabi, and he spoke to me and spoke the truth. Verily Fatima, the daughter of Muhammad, is a part of me and I do not approve that she may be put to any trial and by Allah, the daughter of Allah's Messenger cannot be combined with the daughter of God's enemy (as the co-wives) of one person. Thereupon 'Ali gave up (the idea of his intended) marriage.

12.Ostentation — the Hidden Shirk
'Whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him do righteous work and associate no one in the worship of his Lord.' The Prophet ﷺ called riyāʾ the lesser shirk, and the thing he feared most for his ummah.
o you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders or injury as does one who spends his wealth [only] to be seen by the people and does not believe in allah and the last day. his example is like that of a [large] smooth stone upon which is dust and is hit by a downpour that leaves it bare. they are unable [to keep] anything of what they have earned. and allah does not guide the disbelieving people.
those who make show [of their deeds]
and withhold [simple] assistance.
ibn abbas reported allah's messenger (ﷺ) as saying:if anyone wants to have his deeds widely publicised, allah will publicise (his humiliation). and if anyone makes a hypocritical display (of his deeds) allah will make a display of him
narrated jundub:the prophet (ﷺ) said, "he who lets the people hear of his good deeds intentionally, to win their praise, allah will let the people know his real intention (on the day of resurrection), and he who does good things in public to show off and win the praise of the people, allah will disclose his real intention (and humiliate him)
narrated tarif abi tamima:i saw safwan and jundab and safwan's companions when jundab was advising. they said, "did you hear something from allah's messenger (ﷺ)?" jundab said, "i heard him saying, 'whoever does a good deed in order to show off, allah will expose his intentions on the day of resurrection (before the people), and whoever puts the people into difficulties, allah will put him into difficulties on the day of resurrection.'" the people said (to jundab), "advise us." he said, "the first thing of the human body to purify is the `abdomen, so he who can eat nothing but good food (halal and earned lawfully) should do so, and he who does as much as he can that nothing intervene between him and paradise by not shedding even a handful of blood, (i.e. murdering) should do so
Ibn Abbas (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) as saying: If anyone wants to have his deeds widely publicised, Allah will publicise (his humiliation). And if anyone makes a hypocritical display (of his deeds) Allah will make a display of him.
Narrated Jundub (RA) : The Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, "He who lets the people hear of his good deeds intentionally, to win their praise, Allah will let the people know his real intention (on the Day of Resurrection), and he who does good things in public to show off and win the praise of the people, Allah will disclose his real intention (and humiliate him).

13.Character Can Be Trained
'He has succeeded who purifies it.' The Prophet ﷺ taught that knowledge comes by learning and forbearance by making oneself forbearing — character is not only inborn, it is cultivated.
there has certainly been for you in the messenger of allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in allah and the last day and [who] remembers allah often.
and who is better in speech than one who invites to allah and does righteousness and says, "indeed, i am of the muslims."

Adab & method
Virtue is not a personality type one is born with or without — the last section is deliberate: the Prophet ﷺ taught that character is cultivated. This page praises and warns as the texts do, without ranking any person. The vices named here (pride, envy, anger, showing-off) are named to be treated in oneself, not to be diagnosed in others — the moment a reader uses them as a mirror for a neighbour rather than for the self, the page has been misread.
