1.The First Right — the Right of Allah

'Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him.' The Prophet ﷺ taught Muʿādh that Allah's right upon His servants is that they worship Him alone — this is the root from which every other right grows.

Qur’ānBefore every right of the creation stands the right of the Creator.

worship allah and associate nothing with him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. indeed, allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.

Qur’ānBefore every right of the creation stands the right of the Creator.

and i did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship me.

2.The Rights of Parents

Allah joins His worship to kindness to parents, forbidding even a word of disdain. The Prophet ﷺ said the Lord's pleasure is in the parent's pleasure.

Qur’ānKindness to parents, joined to worship of Allah in the same verse.

and your lord has decreed that you not worship except him, and to parents, good treatment. whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.

Qur’ānKindness to parents, joined to worship of Allah in the same verse.

and lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "my lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when i was] small."

Qur’ānKindness to parents, joined to worship of Allah in the same verse.

and we have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. his mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. be grateful to me and to your parents; to me is the [final] destination.

3.The Rights of Kin — Ties of the Womb

'Fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs.' Whoever wishes his provision widened, let him keep his kin ties — and the truly connecting one gives even when cut off.

Qur’ānMaintaining the ties of the womb — a right attached to Allah's throne.

o mankind, fear your lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. and fear allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. indeed allah is ever, over you, an observer.

Qur’ānMaintaining the ties of the womb — a right attached to Allah's throne.

4.The Mutual Rights of Spouses

'They have rights like those upon them, in kindness.' The best of you is the best to his family; and Allah placed between spouses love and mercy.

Qur’ānSpouses have rights over one another, met with kindness.

divorced women remain in waiting for three periods, and it is not lawful for them to conceal what allah has created in their wombs if they believe in allah and the last day. and their husbands have more right to take them back in this [period] if they want reconciliation. and due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. but the men have a degree over them [in responsibility and authority]. and allah is exalted in might and wise.

Qur’ānSpouses have rights over one another, met with kindness.

o you who have believed, it is not lawful for you to inherit women by compulsion. and do not make difficulties for them in order to take [back] part of what you gave them unless they commit a clear immorality. and live with them in kindness. for if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and allah makes therein much good.

abu huraira (allah be pleased with him) reported allah's apostle (ﷺ) as saying:he who believes in allah and the hereafter, if he witnesses any matter he should talk in good terms about it or keep quiet. act kindly towards woman, for woman is created from a rib, and the most crooked part of the rib is its top. if you attempt to straighten it, you will break it, and if you leave it, its crookedness will remain there. so act kindly towards women

[he commands] that you not associate anything with him, and to parents, good treatment, and do not kill your children out of poverty; we will provide for you and them. and do not approach immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed. and do not kill the soul which allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. this has he instructed you that you may use reason."

worship allah and associate nothing with him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. indeed, allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.

9.Rights of Honour — the Tongue and the Sanctity of Others

'Do not backbite one another.' The Prophet ﷺ said every Muslim's blood, wealth, and honour are inviolable to another; the true Muslim is one from whose tongue and hand others are safe.

Qur’ānHonour is a right — the tongue may not violate it.

o you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. indeed, some assumption is sin. and do not spy or backbite each other. would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? you would detest it. and fear allah; indeed, allah is accepting of repentance and merciful.

10.Trusts and Honest Dealing

'Allah commands you to render trusts to their owners,' and not to consume wealth wrongly. Return the trust to the one who trusted you; whoever cheats is not of us.

Qur’ānTrusts must be returned; dealings must be honest.

indeed, allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. excellent is that which allah instructs you. indeed, allah is ever hearing and seeing.

Qur’ānTrusts must be returned; dealings must be honest.

11.The Day Rights Are Settled

The Prophet ﷺ described the true bankrupt: one who comes with prayer and fasting but had insulted, struck, and taken from others — so his good deeds are handed over until they run out. Settle your debts of wrong here, while an apology still helps.

Qur’ānRights unmet in this world are settled from one's own good deeds in the next.

so whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it,

Qur’ānRights unmet in this world are settled from one's own good deeds in the next.

and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.

Qur’ānRights unmet in this world are settled from one's own good deeds in the next.

and we place the scales of justice for the day of resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. and if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, we will bring it forth. and sufficient are we as accountant.

120- باب: التحلل من المظالم في الدنيا

Adab & method

The most sobering teaching on this page is the last: Allah, out of His generosity, forgives shortcomings in His own right for whom He wills — but the rights of people He leaves to be settled between them, and a wrong done to a servant is not erased by worship alone until the wronged one is made whole or forgives. So this is a page to read pointing inward: whose right have I left unpaid? Not: who has wronged me?
