Zakat intelligence

“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase.” Zakat purifies wealth and the soul, and is the third pillar of Islam.

🏪Business Zakat

Zakat is due on trade goods (inventory bought to resell) at their current market value, plus cash and recoverable receivables. Fixed assets used to run the business — premises, machinery, tools, vehicles — are not zakatable.

Abu Dawud 1562

📈Investment & Shares

Shares bought for trading are valued at full market price like cash. Shares held long-term for dividends are zakatable only on the underlying zakatable assets — commonly estimated at ~25–30% of market value. Avoid shares in clearly haram businesses.

➖Debt Adjustment

Deduct debts and bills that are due now from your zakatable assets. For long-term loans (mortgage, instalments) deduct only the portion payable in the current year — not the entire outstanding balance.

💚Charity never decreases wealth

The Messenger ﷺ said: “Charity does not decrease wealth, no one forgives another except that Allah increases his honour, and no one humbles himself for Allah except that Allah raises his status.”

Riba awareness

Riba (interest/usury) is any predetermined increase charged on a loan or unequal exchange of like-for-like commodities. It is among the gravest major sins in Islam.

📖The Qur’an on riba

“Allah has permitted trade and forbidden riba… O you who believe, fear Allah and give up what remains of riba… If you do not, then be warned of war from Allah and His Messenger.”

Qur’an 2:275–279

⚠️Common situations

  • •Conventional (interest-based) loans and mortgages
  • •Credit-card interest and late-payment charges
  • •Interest earned on conventional savings accounts
  • •Payday loans and interest-bearing overdrafts

Halal alternatives

🤝Murabaha

Cost-plus sale: the bank buys the asset and resells it to you at a disclosed, fixed mark-up paid in instalments — a sale, not a loan.

🏠Ijara

Islamic leasing: the financier owns the asset and leases it to you for rent, often ending in ownership transfer.

🌿Musharaka

Partnership: parties contribute capital and share profit and loss by agreement — risk is shared, not guaranteed.

Financial purification tracker

Doubtful or interest income must be given away to the poor/public benefit WITHOUT intending reward — purely to rid yourself of unlawful wealth. It is not a substitute for sadaqah and earns no reward, but cleanses your assets.
