The Merits of Righteous Deeds

What Allah promises for the acts a believer offers — prayer, remembrance, charity, fasting, the Qur'ān, good character — and how He multiplies a small deed into a mountain of reward.

1.By Intention — and the Reward Multiplied

A single grain spent for Allah becomes seven ears, each of a hundred grains — He multiplies for whom He wills. Whoever comes with a good deed has ten like it; and the Prophet ﷺ taught that a deed is only by its intention.

Qur’ānDeeds rise by intention — and Allah multiplies the good.

the example of those who spend their wealth in the way of allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. and allah multiplies [his reward] for whom he wills. and allah is all-encompassing and knowing.

Qur’ānDeeds rise by intention — and Allah multiplies the good.

whoever comes [on the day of judgement] with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof [to his credit], and whoever comes with an evil deed will not be recompensed except the like thereof; and they will not be wronged.

Qur’ānDeeds rise by intention — and Allah multiplies the good.

who is it that would loan allah a goodly loan so he may multiply it for him many times over? and it is allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to him you will be returned.

2.Prayer — a Light and an Expiation

The Prophet ﷺ asked: if a river ran at your door and you bathed in it five times a day, would any dirt remain? — such are the five prayers, by which Allah wipes away sins. 'Good deeds erase bad deeds.'

Qur’ānPrayer washes sin as a river washes the body.

and establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. that is a reminder for those who remember.

Qur’ānPrayer washes sin as a river washes the body.

recite, [o muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the book and establish prayer. indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of allah is greater. and allah knows that which you do.

Qur’ānPrayer washes sin as a river washes the body.

indeed, i am allah. there is no deity except me, so worship me and establish prayer for my remembrance.

3.Remembrance — Light on the Tongue, Heavy on the Scale

'Remember Me — I will remember you.' The one who remembers his Lord and the one who does not are like the living and the dead; and two words — 'subḥān Allāh wa bi-ḥamdih, subḥān Allāh al-ʿaẓīm' — are beloved to the Merciful and heavy on the Scale.

Qur’ānTwo words light on the tongue, heavy on the Scale.

4.Charity — a Shade, and Sin Extinguished

'Charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire.' Among the seven Allah shades on the Day of no shade but His is the one who gives so secretly his left hand does not know what his right gave. And charity never diminishes wealth.

Qur’ānCharity puts out sin, and shades its giver on the Day.

the example of those who spend their wealth in the way of allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. and allah multiplies [his reward] for whom he wills. and allah is all-encompassing and knowing.

Qur’ānCharity puts out sin, and shades its giver on the Day.

those who spend their wealth [in allah 's way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly - they will have their reward with their lord. and no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.

Qur’ānCharity puts out sin, and shades its giver on the Day.

indeed, the men who practice charity and the women who practice charity and [they who] have loaned allah a goodly loan - it will be multiplied for them, and they will have a noble reward.

Qur’ānCharity puts out sin, and shades its giver on the Day.

and spend [in the way of allah] from what we have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "my lord, if only you would delay me for a brief term so i would give charity and be among the righteous."

HadithصحیحCharity puts out sin, and shades its giver on the Day.

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) as saying: Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth and the servant who forgives Allah adds to his respect, and the one who shows humility Allah elevates him in the estimation (of the people).

5.Fasting — a Shield

'Fasting is a shield.' The one who fasts has two joys — at his breaking of the fast, and at the meeting with his Lord; and whoever fasts a day for Allah, Allah removes his face from the Fire by seventy autumns.

Qur’ānFasting is a shield — and the faster has two joys.

o you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous -

Qur’ānFasting is a shield — and the faster has two joys.

[fasting for] a limited number of days. so whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. and upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. and whoever volunteers excess - it is better for him. but to fast is best for you, if you only knew.

6.The Qur'an — Ten Rewards for Each Letter

'Whoever recites a letter of Allah's Book has a reward, and the reward is multiplied by ten.' The Qur'ān comes on the Day of Resurrection interceding for its companions; and the one skilled in it is with the noble, righteous scribes.

Qur’ānEach letter recited is ten rewards; the Qur'ān itself intercedes.

indeed, those who recite the book of allah and establish prayer and spend [in his cause] out of what we have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a profit that will never perish -

Qur’ānEach letter recited is ten rewards; the Qur'ān itself intercedes.

that he may give them in full their rewards and increase for them of his bounty. indeed, he is forgiving and appreciative.

Qur’ānEach letter recited is ten rewards; the Qur'ān itself intercedes.

then do they not reflect upon the qur'an, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?

7.Good Character — Heaviest on the Scale

'Nothing is heavier on the believer's Scale on the Day of Resurrection than good character.' The most complete of the believers in faith are the best of them in character, and the closest to the Prophet ﷺ on the Day are the best in manners.

Qur’ānNothing is heavier on the Scale than good character.

and indeed, you are of a great moral character.

Qur’ānNothing is heavier on the Scale than good character.

who spend [in the cause of allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and allah loves the doers of good;

Qur’ānNothing is heavier on the Scale than good character.

and not equal are the good deed and the bad. repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.

8.The Deeds Most Beloved Are the Most Constant

'The deeds most beloved to Allah are the most constant, even if few.' Take on only what you can sustain, for Allah does not tire until you tire; a little kept up outweighs a burst that burns out.

Qur’ānThe deeds most beloved to Allah are the constant ones, though small.

so remain on a right course as you have been commanded, [you] and those who have turned back with you [to allah], and do not transgress. indeed, he is seeing of what you do.

Qur’ānThe deeds most beloved to Allah are the constant ones, though small.

9.The Seasons of Multiplied Reward

The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months; whoever stands in it in faith, seeking reward, is forgiven. No days' deeds are more beloved to Allah than the first ten of Dhū al-Ḥijja; and whoever fasts Ramadan in faith is forgiven all that came before.

Qur’ānSome nights and days carry the reward of a lifetime.

indeed, we sent the qur'an down during the night of decree.

Qur’ānSome nights and days carry the reward of a lifetime.

and what can make you know what is the night of decree?

Qur’ānSome nights and days carry the reward of a lifetime.

the night of decree is better than a thousand months.

Qur’ānSome nights and days carry the reward of a lifetime.

the month of ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. so whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify allah for that [to] which he has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.

10.Deeds That Outlive You

When a person dies his deeds end — except three: an ongoing charity, knowledge benefited from, or a righteous child who prays for him. 'We record what they sent ahead and their traces.' Whoever guides to good has the like of its doer's reward.

Qur’ānSome deeds keep earning after death.

indeed, it is we who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind, and all things we have enumerated in a clear register.

Qur’ānSome deeds keep earning after death.

and their lord responded to them, "never will i allow to be lost the work of [any] worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another. so those who emigrated or were evicted from their homes or were harmed in my cause or fought or were killed - i will surely remove from them their misdeeds, and i will surely admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow as reward from allah, and allah has with him the best reward."

Qur’ānSome deeds keep earning after death.

so whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it,

Adab & method

This page gathers Allah's promises to encourage, not to price worship like a transaction. The reward is real and the texts are exact, but the deed's worth turns on sincerity: the same prayer can be a light or an empty motion depending on the heart behind it. Read it to be moved toward the deed — then leave the reward to the One who promised it, and worship Him because He is worthy, the reward following as His grace, not your wage.
