Qur’ān — Allah’s pleasure with them

Several verses speak of the Muhājirūn and Anṣār by name and record Allah’s pleasure with them.

Qur’ānThe foremost of the Muhājirūn and Anṣār — and those who follow them well

And the first forerunners [in faith] among the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār and those who followed them with good conduct — Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.

Qur’ānBayʿat al-Riḍwān — the pledge under the tree

Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muḥammad], under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest.

Qur’ānTheir described character: firm against disbelief, merciful among themselves

Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty from Allah and [His] pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration.

Qur’ānAllah turned in forgiveness to the Prophet ﷺ, the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār

Allah has already forgiven the Prophet and the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār who followed him in the hour of difficulty, after the hearts of a party of them had almost inclined [to doubt]; then He forgave them. Indeed, He is to them Kind and Merciful.

Qur’ānThe believers in truth: those who emigrated, strove, and gave shelter

But those who have believed and emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided — it is they who are the believers, truly. For them is forgiveness and noble provision.

Qur’ānRanks differ — yet Allah promised all of them the best reward

Not equal among you are those who spent before the conquest [of Makkah] and fought — they are greater in degree than those who spent afterwards and fought. But to all Allah has promised the best [reward].

Qur’ān — how later believers speak of them

This verse is the Qur’ān’s own instruction to every generation that comes after the Companions.

Qur’ānThe duʿā of those who came after: forgiveness, and no rancour in the heart

And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.”

Qur’ānThe best nation raised for mankind — addressed first to that generation

You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.

Hadith — their standing with the Prophet ﷺ

HadithṢaḥīḥA direct prohibition against reviling the Companions

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not revile my Companions, for if any one of you were to spend gold equal to Uḥud [in charity], it would not equal a handful of one of them — nor even half of it.”

HadithṢaḥīḥThe best of generations is the Prophet’s ﷺ own

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The people of my generation are the best, then those who follow them, then those who follow the latter.”

HadithṢaḥīḥLove of the Anṣār is a sign of faith

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Love for the Anṣār is a sign of faith, and hatred for the Anṣār is a sign of hypocrisy.”

HadithṢaḥīḥThe people of Badr — a special divine favour

Regarding the people of Badr, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said: ‘Do what you wish, for I have forgiven you.’”

The way of Muslim scholars

The way of the Muslim community: we love all of the Companions, we mention them with respect (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhum), and we withhold judgement on the disputes that arose between them — those matters were the subject of their own ijtihād and their account rests with Allah. We do not curse or dissociate from any Muslim, and we make the duʿā the Qur’ān taught us in 59:10 — asking Allah to leave no rancour in our hearts toward the believers.
