…And establish prayer and give zakāh and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin], O people of the [Prophet’s] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification.
Ahl al-Bayt in Qur’ān & Hadith
The household of the Prophet ﷺ — their honour, and the believer’s duty of love toward them.
Note: the Qur’ān’s Arabic is never machine-narrated — only the Urdu translation is spoken. Hadith are narrated as meaning (mafhūm), not verbatim. Tap a reference for the original.
Who are the Ahl al-Bayt?
The Qur’ān addresses the Prophet’s ﷺ wives directly as the people of the household (33:32–34), and an authentic narration shows the Prophet ﷺ gathering ʿAlī, Fāṭima, al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn under his cloak and naming them so too. Muslim scholars therefore includes both — the wives and the family of ʿAlī and Fāṭima — and also the wider Banū Hāshim for whom ṣadaqa is not permitted.
O wives of the Prophet, you are not like anyone among women. If you fear Allah, then do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech.
Umm Salama رضي الله عنها reported that the Prophet ﷺ put a garment over al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥusayn, ʿAlī and Fāṭima, and said: “O Allah, these are the people of my household, so remove impurity from them and purify them thoroughly.”
Qur’ān — love and honour for the Prophet’s kin
Say, [O Muḥammad], “I do not ask you for this message any payment [but] only good will through kinship.” And whoever commits a good deed — We will increase for him good therein.
Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.
Then whoever argues with you about it after [this] knowledge has come to you — say, “Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars [among us].”
Hadith — their honour in the Sunnah
Zayd b. Arqam رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ addressed the people and said: “I am leaving among you two weighty things: the first is the Book of Allah, in which is guidance and light — so hold fast to it.” Then he said: “And the people of my household; I remind you of Allah concerning my household,” repeating it three times.
The Companions asked how to send blessings upon him, and he ﷺ taught them: “O Allah, send blessings upon Muḥammad and upon the family of Muḥammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrāhīm and upon the family of Ibrāhīm…” — so his family is named in the prayer every Muslim recites.
Ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn will be the leaders of the youth of Paradise, and their father is better than them.”
ʿĀʾisha رضي الله عنها reported that the Prophet ﷺ called Fāṭima and whispered to her, and she wept; then he whispered again and she laughed. He had told her of his approaching passing, and then that she would be the first of his household to follow him — and that she would be the chief of the women of the believers.
The way of Muslim scholars
Loving the Ahl al-Bayt is part of faith, and their honour is established by the Qur’ān and the authentic Sunnah — not by exaggeration. Muslim scholars holds the balance the Prophet ﷺ himself set: we love his household and we love his Companions, without raising anyone above the station Allah gave them, and without belittling anyone Allah honoured. The two loves belong together.
