What the Sunnah says about naming
- The most beloved of names to Allah are ʿAbdullāh and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.Sahih Muslim 2132
- Name yourselves by the names of the Prophets.Sahih Muslim 2315; Abu Dawud 4950
- Names of the form ʿAbd + a Name of Allah — ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, ʿAbd al-Karīm — are encouraged.Sahih Muslim 2132
- Avoid names of bad or boastful meaning; the Prophet ﷺ changed such names.Sahih al-Bukhari 6193; Sahih Muslim 2139
- The child is named on the seventh day, when the ʿaqīqah is offered and the head is shaved.Abu Dawud 2838; Tirmidhi 1522
We do not suggest names from a birth date, a star sign or a numerological value. Choosing that way is divination, which the Sunnah forbids (Sahih Muslim 2230). The method above is the one the Sunnah gives, and it needs nothing but the meaning of the name.
