The Shahada — the words that change everything

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illa-llāh, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlu-llāh.

These few words — whether you have just said them, or your heart is still gathering the courage — are the doorway to Islam. They simply declare what the Qur’an asks us to know: that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah (Qur’an 47:19), and that Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger. No ceremony, no waiting period, no gatekeeper. And here is the part many new Muslims don’t hear soon enough: the Prophet ﷺ taught that accepting Islam wipes out everything that came before it (Muslim 121). Every past sin — all of it — is forgiven the moment you embrace Islam. You are starting today with a completely clean page. Take a breath. Welcome.
