Welcome to Islam — take it one step at a time

You do not have to learn everything at once. Allah is most merciful, and this religion was made gentle for you.

“The religion is easy, and no one overburdens himself in his religion but it will overpower him…”

Sahih al-Bukhari 39 — grade: Sahih

Learn the Arabic gradually — transliteration is a temporary bridge. Roman letters can never fully capture Arabic sounds, so try to learn the script with a teacher when you can.

Takbir (opening)

Allāhu Akbar

Allah is the Greatest.

Thana (opening supplication)

Subhānaka-llāhumma wa bi-hamdika, wa tabāraka-smuka, wa taʿālā jadduka, wa lā ilāha ghayruk

Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise; blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god but You.

Taʿawwudh (seeking refuge)

Aʿūdhu billāhi mina-sh-shayṭāni-r-rajīm

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan.

Tasmiyah (basmalah)

Bismillāhi-r-Raḥmāni-r-Raḥīm

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Al-Fatiha (the Opening, 1:1-7)

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbil-ʿālamīn · Ar-Raḥmāni-r-Raḥīm · Māliki yawmi-d-dīn · Iyyāka naʿbudu wa iyyāka nastaʿīn · Ihdina-ṣ-ṣirāṭal-mustaqīm · Ṣirāṭa-lladhīna anʿamta ʿalayhim ghayril-maghḍūbi ʿalayhim wa la-ḍ-ḍāllīn

All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds; the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful; Master of the Day of Judgement. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path — the path of those You have blessed, not those who earned anger, nor those who went astray. (Surah 1:1-7)

Surah Al-Ikhlas (112:1-4)

Qul huwa-llāhu aḥad · Allāhu-ṣ-ṣamad · Lam yalid wa lam yūlad · Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad

Say: He is Allah, the One; Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, and there is none comparable to Him. (Surah 112:1-4)

Rukūʿ (bowing — say ×3)

Subḥāna Rabbiyal-ʿAẓīm

Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent.

Rising from rukūʿ

Samiʿa-llāhu liman ḥamidah · Rabbanā wa laka-l-ḥamd

Allah hears the one who praises Him. Our Lord, to You is all praise.

At-taḥiyyātu lillāhi wa-ṣ-ṣalawātu wa-ṭ-ṭayyibāt · As-salāmu ʿalayka ayyuha-n-nabiyyu wa raḥmatu-llāhi wa barakātuh · As-salāmu ʿalaynā wa ʿalā ʿibādi-llāhi-ṣ-ṣāliḥīn · Ashhadu an lā ilāha illa-llāh · wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa rasūluh

All greetings, prayers and good things are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

Durood Ibrahim (sending blessings)

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā ṣallayta ʿalā Ibrāhīma wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka ḥamīdun majīd. Allāhumma bārik ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā bārakta ʿalā Ibrāhīma wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka ḥamīdun majīd

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and his family; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and his family as You blessed Ibrahim and his family; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

Salam (closing — turn right then left)

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatu-llāh

Peace and the mercy of Allah be upon you.
