The occasions of revelation — the events behind which these verses of the Qur’an were sent down.
What is Asbāb al-Nuzūl?
Asbāb al-nuzūl ("occasions of revelation") is the branch of Qur’anic sciences that records the event, question, or situation behind the revelation of a verse. It is a strictly narration-based science: an occasion can only be known through an authentic report from the Companions — never through opinion or guesswork.
It is key to tafsīr: knowing the occasion clarifies a verse’s meaning, whom its words address, and the wisdom of its ruling — as with the change of qiblah (2:144), the slander of ʿĀʾishah (24:11), or Khawlah’s plea (58:1). A famous principle governs its use: “consideration is given to the generality of the wording, not the specificity of the cause” — a verse is never confined to its occasion, but applies to every case it describes.
Its limits matter too: most of the Qur’an was revealed initially, with no specific occasion at all; and many transmitted “occasions” are weak or merely an exegete’s surmise. This page keeps only famous, well-attested occasions — most from al-Bukhārī and Muslim — and where a report’s chain is softer, its grade says so plainly.

al-Baqarah 2:97Juzʾ 1Ṣaḥīḥ (in substance)
When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madīnah, learned men among the Jews came questioning him. On learning that the angel who brought him revelation was Jibrīl, they declared Jibrīl their enemy — the angel, they claimed, of war and severity — saying that had it been Mīkāʾīl they would have believed. The verse was revealed in answer: whoever is an enemy of Jibrīl should know that he brought the Qurʾān down upon the Prophet's heart by Allah's own permission.
Lesson: Enmity toward the messenger of the message is enmity toward its Sender; truth is not refused because of who carries it.

A party of Companions travelling with the Prophet ﷺ prayed on a dark, overcast night, each man judging the qiblah as best he could. When dawn broke they found they had prayed in different directions and asked the Prophet ﷺ about it. According to this famous report the verse "to Allah belong the east and the west — wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah" was revealed, excusing the sincere effort of one who genuinely cannot determine the qiblah.
Lesson: Allah judges the sincere effort of the heart; honest ijtihād in worship is not punished for its mistake.

ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb related that his view coincided with his Lord's revelation in three matters. One of them: he said, "O Messenger of Allah, if only we took the Station of Ibrāhīm as a place of prayer" — and Allah revealed "and take the Station of Ibrāhīm as a place of prayer." To this day the two rakʿahs after ṭawāf are prayed behind that stone on which Ibrāhīm stood.
Lesson: Allah may honour the sound intuition of a truthful believer by confirming it in revelation — yet the ruling stands only once revealed.

The Prophet ﷺ longed to be turned toward the Kaʿbah, often raising his face to the sky while still praying toward Jerusalem. This verse came in answer, redirecting the qiblah to the Sacred Mosque — a change the Companions implemented at once, even mid-prayer: the congregation at Qubāʾ turned where they stood when the news reached them.
Lesson: Allah answers the unspoken longing of hearts turned to Him — and true faith obeys a command the instant it arrives.

Some Companions hesitated to walk between Ṣafā and Marwah, since the two hills had borne idols in the days of ignorance and they feared the saʿy resembled a pagan rite. ʿĀʾishah related that this verse was revealed to affirm that walking between them is a symbol of Allah, carrying no blame.
Lesson: Acts of worship are defined by revelation, not by their past misuse; what Allah declares His symbol is cleansed of its history.

A desert Arab came asking: "Is our Lord near, that we should whisper to Him — or far, that we should call out to Him?" In answer this gentle verse was revealed: "When My servants ask you about Me — indeed I am near; I answer the call of the caller when he calls upon Me." Uniquely, Allah did not even say "tell them"; He answered directly.
Lesson: No intermediary stands between the servant and his Lord in duʿāʾ — He is near, and He Himself answers.

Early in Islam, eating and intimacy were forbidden once a fasting person slept at night. Some Companions, like ʿUmar, fell into difficulty over this; Qays ibn Ṣirmah fainted at work after a night without food. The verse was revealed permitting eating, drinking and relations through the night until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black — easing the rule, to the Companions' great joy.
Lesson: The sharīʿah moves toward ease; when His servants struggle, Allah lightens without compromising the worship.

People asked the Prophet ﷺ about the new moons — why the crescent grows thin, then full, then wanes. The answer redirected them from astronomy to purpose: "they are appointed times for mankind and for ḥajj." The same verse corrected an Anṣār custom: a man returning from iḥrām would enter his house from the back rather than its door, thinking it piety. Revelation declared that righteousness is not entering houses from their backs, but taqwā.
Lesson: Revelation answers what benefits the questioner; piety lies in obeying Allah, not in self-invented hardships.

At Ḥudaybiyah, Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah was brought to the Prophet ﷺ with lice falling onto his face from his head while in iḥrām. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Does your affliction trouble you this much?" and told him to shave his head and offer the compensation the verse then fixed: a fast of three days, feeding six poor people, or a sacrifice. So was revealed "whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head — then a ransom of fasting, charity or sacrifice."
Lesson: The law bends for genuine hardship through fixed, dignified alternatives — never by abandoning the rite altogether.

When Ṣuhayb al-Rūmī set out to migrate to Madīnah, riders of Quraysh pursued him, refusing to let a man who had arrived poor leave with wealth he earned among them. He dismounted, notched an arrow, and said: you know I am the best archer among you — but take my wealth, all of it, and let me go to my Lord. They agreed. On this, "and among the people is he who sells his very self seeking the pleasure of Allah" was revealed, and the Prophet ﷺ greeted him: "The trade has profited, Abū Yaḥyā!"
Lesson: Dunya is a price worth paying for the dīn; whoever gives up wealth for Allah has made the most profitable trade.

ʿUmar prayed, "O Allah, give us a clear ruling on wine, for it destroys wealth and reason." The first answer was this verse: in wine and gambling is great sin and some benefit, "but their sin is greater than their benefit." He prayed again, and the prohibition during prayer times came (4:43); he prayed a third time, and the decisive verses of al-Māʾidah (5:90–91) were revealed — at "so will you desist?" ʿUmar said: "We have desisted, we have desisted."
Lesson: Allah weaned hearts off entrenched habits by stages — wisdom in daʿwah follows the same patient gradualism.

The Jews of Madīnah would shun a menstruating woman entirely — not eating or sitting with her. The Companions asked the Prophet ﷺ about this, and the verse was revealed clarifying that only marital intimacy is to be avoided during menses, while all other normal interaction continues. "Do everything," the Prophet ﷺ said, "except intercourse."
Lesson: Islam replaced harsh social exclusion with a balanced ruling that honours both purity and the woman's dignity.

A false notion circulated that the manner of approaching one's wife affected the child. Jābir reported that this verse — "your wives are a tilth for you" — was revealed to correct the misconception, affirming lawful intimacy within marriage without such superstition.
Lesson: Revelation clears married life of superstition; the lawful is governed by Allah's word, not by folklore.

The command to "guard the prayers, especially the middle prayer" was emphasised when the Confederates kept the Prophet ﷺ from praying ʿAṣr at its time. He said they had distracted them from the middle prayer, identifying it — in the strongest reports — as ʿAṣr.
Lesson: Even war does not lift the guard over ṣalāh; its fixed times outrank every worldly press.

Before Islam, an Anṣārī woman whose infants died would vow that if a child lived she would raise him among the Jews. When Banū al-Naḍīr were expelled from Madīnah, some children of the Anṣār were among them, and their families said, "We will not leave our sons!" — wanting to force them into Islam. Then was revealed: "There is no compulsion in religion; right guidance has become distinct from error," and each youth was given his own choice.
Lesson: Faith accepted under force is no faith; Islam summons by clear proof, and the choice must remain free.

Some people would bring bunches of the worst, driest dates and hang them in the mosque as the charity of the date harvest, thinking anything would do for the poor. The verse was revealed: "O you who believe, spend from the good things you have earned… and do not aim at the bad of it to spend, when you yourselves would only take it with closed eyes."
Lesson: Charity is measured by what you would accept for yourself; giving Allah your worst betrays the heart's esteem of Him.

When "whether you disclose what is in yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it" (2:284) was revealed, it weighed on the Companions as nothing before. They came to the Prophet ﷺ, knelt, and said: we cannot bear being taken to task even for the thoughts of our hearts. He told them not to say "we hear and we disobey" like those before them, but "we hear and we obey." When they submitted, Allah abrogated the hardship with "Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity" — and answered every plea of the closing verses: "I have done so."
Lesson: Submit first, and relief follows; Allah's way with those who say "we hear and obey" is mercy, not burden.

A man disputed with al-Ashʿath ibn Qays over a well and its land. The Prophet ﷺ asked al-Ashʿath for evidence; he had none, so the other man was to swear. Al-Ashʿath said: "then he will swear falsely and take it!" The Prophet ﷺ declared that whoever swears a false oath to seize a Muslim's property will meet Allah while He is angry with him — and Allah revealed: "those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter."
Lesson: A false oath may win a piece of land and lose the Hereafter; no gain is worth Allah's anger.

On the day of Uḥud, two clans among the Anṣār — Banū Salimah and Banū Ḥārithah — were inclined to lose heart and withdraw. Jābir reported this verse was revealed about them, yet it adds that "Allah was their protector" — and they were glad it was so revealed.
Lesson: When hearts waver, it is Allah's guardianship that holds the believer firm — and He may record even a rebuke with mercy.

When the Prophet ﷺ was wounded at Uḥud and began to invoke against certain leaders of the disbelievers in the dawn prayer, this verse came: "The matter is not yours to decide" — teaching that their guidance or punishment rests with Allah alone. Some of those very men later embraced Islam.
Lesson: Even the Prophet ﷺ did not own outcomes; never despair of any person's guidance, for hearts are in Allah's hand.

The Companions asked about the verse "think not of those slain in Allah's way as dead." The Prophet ﷺ explained that Allah placed the souls of the martyrs of Uḥud within green birds that roam the rivers of Paradise and shelter in lamps beneath the Throne. When asked if they desired anything more, they wished only that their brothers on earth could know their state, so none would shrink from the field. So Allah Himself conveyed it: "rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision."
Lesson: What is given up for Allah is never lost; the martyr's death is an entrance into provision, not an ending.

Some hypocrites would stay back from an expedition, then excuse themselves and expect praise for doing nothing. Ibn ʿAbbās explained that this verse about "those who rejoice in what they have done and love to be praised for what they did not do" was revealed concerning them.
Lesson: Craving credit for deeds never done is the mark of hypocrisy; sincerity works for Allah's sight, not people's praise.

The widow of Saʿd ibn al-Rabīʿ came to the Prophet ﷺ with her two daughters, for their uncle had taken all the inheritance, leaving them nothing to marry on. The verses of inheritance shares were then revealed, securing the daughters two-thirds and the mother her portion — and the uncle was ordered to hand it over.
Lesson: Inheritance shares are Allah's own apportioning; no strong hand may seize what He assigned to the weak.

Before the full prohibition of wine, a Companion led the maghrib prayer while intoxicated and confused the recitation. This verse — "do not approach prayer while intoxicated" — was then revealed, a step on the path to wine's total prohibition.
Lesson: Nothing may stand between the worshipper and awareness of what he says to his Lord; the law guarded ṣalāh first.

Ibn ʿAbbās reported that this verse — "obey Allah, the Messenger, and those in authority among you" — was revealed concerning a man whom the Prophet ﷺ placed in command of a small expedition, defining the limits and conditions of obedience to leaders.
Lesson: Obedience to authority is real but bounded — there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator.

Al-Zubayr disputed with a man of the Anṣār over irrigation water. The Prophet ﷺ judged in al-Zubayr's favour; the other grumbled that it was only because al-Zubayr was the Prophet's relative. This verse was revealed, swearing they do not truly believe until they accept the Prophet's judgement without resentment.
Lesson: Faith is not complete until the Prophet's ﷺ ruling is accepted outwardly and inwardly, with no tightness in the chest.

When ʿAbdullāh ibn Ubayy turned back with a third of the army before Uḥud, the Companions split over how to treat those who had deserted: one party said fight them, the other said no. The verse was revealed rebuking the split itself: "What is the matter with you that you are two parties concerning the hypocrites, when Allah has cast them back for what they earned?" — and the Prophet ﷺ said Madīnah expels its dross as the furnace expels the dross of iron.
Lesson: Hypocrisy must not be allowed to divide the sincere; the believers' ranks are guarded before the enemy is fought.

When the verse distinguishing the mujāhidīn from those who sit at home was dictated, the blind Companion Ibn Umm Maktūm objected that he had a valid excuse. The Prophet ﷺ then received the addition "except the disabled", and Zayd ibn Thābit, who was writing, felt the revelation's weight upon his thigh.
Lesson: Revelation itself paused to be just to the excused; the law weighs each person by his true capacity.

Some Muslims in Makkah concealed their faith and stayed on after the hijrah was made a duty. When Quraysh marched to Badr they were forced out with the army, and some of them were struck down in the fighting. Concerning them was revealed: "those whom the angels take while they are wronging themselves, the angels say: in what condition were you? They say: we were oppressed in the land. They say: was not Allah's earth spacious enough for you to migrate?"
Lesson: Where living the dīn becomes impossible, remaining by choice is itself a wrong; Allah's earth is wide.

Ṭuʿmah ibn Ubayriq stole a coat of mail and hid it with an innocent Jew, and when suspicion closed in, his clan came pleading eloquently to the Prophet ﷺ to clear him and blame the Jew. The verses were revealed: "We have sent down the Book to you in truth so you may judge between people by what Allah has shown you — so do not be an advocate for the treacherous." The theft was exposed, and the Qurʾān recorded forever that no advocacy may bend the truth.
Lesson: Justice in Islam is owed even to a non-Muslim against a Muslim; clan loyalty never outweighs the truth.

"Today I have perfected for you your religion" was revealed on the Day of ʿArafah during the Farewell Pilgrimage. A Jewish man later told ʿUmar that had such a verse come to them, they would have taken its day as a festival — to which ʿUmar noted it was revealed on two festivals, ʿArafah and a Friday.
Lesson: The dīn is complete and needs no additions; perfection is Allah's finished gift, guarded from invention.

ʿĀʾishah's necklace was lost on a journey and the army halted to search where there was no water. The verse of tayammum (dry ablution) was then revealed, allowing purification with clean earth when water is unavailable. Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr remarked that this was not the first blessing the family of Abū Bakr brought the Muslims.
Lesson: What looked like an inconvenience became a lasting ease for the whole ummah; hardship can carry hidden mercy.

In the early Madīnan years the Prophet ﷺ would be guarded at night. ʿĀʾishah related that when "Allah will protect you from the people" was revealed, he put his head out of the tent and said: "O people, depart — for Allah has protected me." From that night he dismissed the guard, entrusting his safety to the promise of his Lord.
Lesson: Trust in Allah's promise is acted upon, not merely spoken; when He guarantees, precautions may be laid down.

The decisive verse forbidding wine and gambling — "intoxicants and gambling… are filth from the work of Shayṭān, so avoid it" — completed a gradual prohibition. When it was revealed, the streets of Madīnah ran with the wine that the Companions poured out at once.
Lesson: Gradual training produced instant obedience when the final command came; hearts prepared by īmān do not bargain.

Chiefs of Quraysh told the Prophet ﷺ they might sit with him and listen — if he first dismissed the poor believers around him: Bilāl, ʿAmmār, Ṣuhayb, Ibn Masʿūd, Saʿd and their like. Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ related that the thought merely crossed the Prophet's heart, hoping for the chiefs' Islam, when Allah revealed: "Do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face."
Lesson: The poor of the believers are the honour of the gathering, not its embarrassment; daʿwah never trades away the sincere.

When "those who believe and do not mix their faith with injustice (ẓulm)" was revealed, the Companions were distressed, asking who among them never wrongs himself. The Prophet ﷺ explained that the ẓulm intended here is shirk — citing Luqmān's words "associating partners with Allah is a great injustice".
Lesson: The Qurʾān explains the Qurʾān; rulings are understood by revelation's own usage, not by fearful guesswork.

After Badr the Companions disputed over the distribution of the spoils. Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ described how the matter was contested, and the opening of Sūrat al-Anfāl was revealed, assigning the spoils to Allah and His Messenger and commanding the believers to set matters right between themselves.
Lesson: Wealth must never divide believers; setting hearts right comes before dividing gains.

In his arrogance Abū Jahl prayed at the Kaʿbah: "O Allah, if this is indeed the truth from You, then rain stones upon us from the sky or bring us a painful punishment." The Qurʾān recorded his very words in this verse — and answered in the next: Allah would not punish them while the Prophet ﷺ was among them, nor while any sought forgiveness.
Lesson: Arrogance dares punishment rather than ask guidance; the Prophet's presence and istighfār are shields against Allah's wrath.

After the victory at Badr the Prophet ﷺ consulted his Companions about the seventy captives. Abū Bakr counselled accepting ransom, hoping Allah would guide them; ʿUmar counselled the sword against the leaders of disbelief. Ransom was accepted, and then revelation descended reproaching the choice — "it is not for a prophet to hold captives until he has thoroughly subdued the land" — and the Prophet ﷺ and Abū Bakr were found weeping at how close the punishment had come.
Lesson: Even beloved decisions of the best of creation were corrected by revelation — the ummah's compass is wahy, not sentiment.

On the march to Tabūk a man in a gathering said: "We have seen none like these reciters of ours — greedier of belly, more lying of tongue, more cowardly at the meeting of armies." Word reached the Prophet ﷺ and the Qurʾān descended. The man came running, clinging to the strap of the Prophet's camel: "We were only talking idly and playing!" The answer burned: "Was it Allah, His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking? Make no excuse — you have disbelieved after your belief."
Lesson: Mockery of the dīn is no light joke; the tongue can undo faith while its owner laughs.

When the call went out to fund the army, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf brought a great sum, and Abū ʿAqīl brought a single ṣāʿ of dates earned by a night's labour hauling water. The hypocrites sneered at both: the rich man "only shows off", and of the poor man's handful, "Allah has no need of this." Allah answered: "those who defame the willing givers among the believers, and those who find nothing but their effort, and mock them — Allah mocks them, and theirs is a painful punishment."
Lesson: No sincere gift is too small and no generous gift too suspect; the mocker of givers earns Allah's own derision.

When the leader of the hypocrites ʿAbdullāh ibn Ubayy died, his son asked the Prophet ﷺ to pray over him, and he began to. ʿUmar objected. Then this verse was revealed forbidding the Prophet ﷺ from praying over any of them or standing at their graves, and he never prayed over a hypocrite again.
Lesson: Outward prayers avail nothing for one who died denying Allah; ends are judged by what the heart carried.

As Abū Ṭālib lay dying, the Prophet ﷺ pleaded: "O uncle, say lā ilāha illa Allāh — a word by which I may argue for you before Allah." But Abū Jahl and his companion kept pressing, "Will you forsake the religion of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib?" — and his last word was that he remained on it. The Prophet ﷺ said, "I will keep seeking forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden." Then was revealed: "It is not for the Prophet and the believers to seek forgiveness for the mushrikīn, even if kin, after it is clear they are companions of the Blaze."
Lesson: Love cannot override Allah's decree; even the dearest kinship submits to the boundary of tawḥīd.

Kaʿb ibn Mālik and two others honestly stayed behind from Tabūk without excuse and were boycotted for fifty days until the earth, vast as it was, closed in on them. This verse announcing the acceptance of "the three who were left behind" was then revealed, and the Prophet ﷺ gave them the glad tidings.
Lesson: Truthfulness, however costly, ends in Allah's acceptance; the liars were excused by men but ruined before Allah.

After Ḥamzah was killed and mutilated at Uḥud, the Prophet ﷺ was deeply grieved and considered retaliating in kind. This verse — "if you punish, punish with the like of what you were afflicted with, but if you are patient, it is better" — was revealed, and he chose patience.
Lesson: Retaliation is bounded by strict justice — and patience stands higher still, even in the deepest grief.

The Jews instructed the Quraysh to test the Prophet ﷺ by asking him about the Spirit (al-Rūḥ). Ibn Masʿūd reported that while he walked with the Prophet ﷺ, this question was put, and the verse came: "They ask you about the Spirit. Say: the Spirit is from the command of my Lord."
Lesson: Some realities lie beyond created knowledge; saying "Allah knows best" is itself knowledge.

In Makkah, when the Prophet ﷺ recited the Qurʾān aloud in prayer, the mushrikīn would revile the Qurʾān, its Sender and its bringer; and if he recited too softly, his own companions could not benefit. Ibn ʿAbbās said this verse came for that very situation: "Do not be loud in your prayer, nor silent in it, but seek between that a way."
Lesson: Wisdom holds the middle course — worship is guarded from both provocation and ineffectiveness.

Prompted by the rabbis, Quraysh asked the Prophet ﷺ about the young men of the cave, the great traveller (Dhū al-Qarnayn) and the Spirit. He said, "I will answer you tomorrow" — without adding "if Allah wills." The revelation withheld itself for days until he was grieved and the Makkans gloated; then Sūrat al-Kahf descended with the answers and the abiding correction: "Never say of anything, I will do it tomorrow, except: if Allah wills."
Lesson: The morrow belongs to Allah alone; "in shāʾ Allāh" is not a habit of speech but a creed of dependence.

Once, Jibrīl's visits paused, and the Prophet ﷺ felt the absence keenly. When the angel came he asked him, "What kept you from visiting us more often than you do?" The verse descended as the answer, spoken by the angels themselves: "We do not descend except by the command of your Lord; to Him belongs what is before us and what is behind us."
Lesson: Even the angels move only by command; longing for the good must still bow to Allah's timing.

Abū Dharr used to swear that "these are two adversaries who disputed about their Lord" was revealed about the six who met in single combat on the day of Badr: Ḥamzah, ʿAlī and ʿUbaydah ibn al-Ḥārith stepping out for the believers against ʿUtbah, Shaybah and al-Walīd of the disbelievers — the argument of faith and unbelief settled sword in hand before the two armies met.
Lesson: The deepest dispute in history is over the Lord Himself; every lesser quarrel takes its worth from where one stands in that one.

When the Prophet ﷺ was driven out of Makkah, Abū Bakr said: "They have expelled their Prophet — truly we belong to Allah; they will surely perish." Then was revealed: "Permission is given to those who are fought, because they were wronged — and indeed Allah is able to give them victory" — the first verse ever revealed concerning fighting, after years in which the believers' only command had been restraint.
Lesson: Fighting in Islam was legislated for the wronged, not the aggressor; permission came only after long oppression.

Hilāl ibn Umayyah accused his wife of adultery but could bring no witnesses, facing the penalty for false accusation. The verses of liʿān (mutual oath-taking between spouses) were then revealed, providing the lawful procedure for such a case.
Lesson: The sharīʿah leaves no impossible bind unanswered; for the case no witness could solve, Allah legislated a way out.

When ʿĀʾishah was slandered (the incident of al-Ifk) and a month of anguish passed, the verses declaring her innocence — "indeed those who brought forth the lie are a group among you" — were revealed, vindicating her and warning those who spread the falsehood.
Lesson: Honour is established by evidence, not rumour; passing on a slander unexamined makes one a partner in it.

On the etiquette of entering homes — "do not enter houses other than your own until you have asked permission and greeted their occupants" — this verse legislated seeking permission, a courtesy the Companions then carefully observed before entering one another's homes.
Lesson: The home's privacy is sacred ground; permission and greeting are owed before a threshold is crossed.

People of shirk who had killed many and committed much zinā came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: what you say and call to is good — if only you would tell us that anything we did can be expiated. Then were revealed the verses "those who do not invoke with Allah another deity, nor kill the soul… save he who repents, believes and works righteousness — for them Allah will change their evil deeds into good ones," and with them "say: O My servants who have transgressed…" (39:53).
Lesson: No past bars the door of tawbah; Allah does not merely erase the repentant sinner's record — He transforms it.

When "and warn your nearest kindred" was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ climbed aṣ-Ṣafā and called Quraysh clan by clan — "O Banū Kaʿb, O Banū ʿAbd Manāf, O Banū Hāshim… O Fāṭimah bint Muḥammad — save yourselves from the Fire, for I cannot avail you against Allah at all; you have kinship with me, and I shall honour its bond."
Lesson: Daʿwah begins at home, and lineage saves no one; each soul must answer for itself before Allah.

At Abū Ṭālib's deathbed the Prophet ﷺ pressed him to utter the testimony of faith, while the men of Quraysh at his side pressed him to die on the religion of his fathers — and he did. The Prophet ﷺ grieved for the uncle who had shielded him for decades yet refused the one word that mattered. Allah consoled him: "You do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills, and He knows best the guided."
Lesson: Guidance is Allah's gift, not a preacher's achievement; our duty is conveying, His alone is the opening of hearts.

When Persia crushed Rome, the mushrikīn of Makkah gloated: the fire-worshippers had beaten the People of the Book, kin in creed to the Muslims. Then descended: "The Romans have been defeated in the nearest land, but they, after their defeat, will be victorious within a few years — to Allah belongs the command before and after." Abū Bakr wagered Quraysh on it (before wagers were forbidden), and within the appointed term Rome triumphed — and the believers rejoiced in Allah's help.
Lesson: The Qurʾān staked its truth on an open prophecy of the future — and history obeyed, exactly within the term.

Anas ibn al-Naḍr missed Badr and it weighed on him: "If Allah grants me another field beside His Messenger, Allah will see what I do." At Uḥud, when the ranks broke, he pressed forward saying, "I find the scent of Paradise beyond Uḥud," and fought until he fell — over eighty wounds later, only his sister could recognise him, by his fingertips. His nephew Anas said they held that this verse came concerning him and his like: "among the believers are men who have been true to what they pledged to Allah."
Lesson: A pledge to Allah is redeemed in deeds, not words; the truthful pay it in full when the test arrives.

Umm Salamah asked the Prophet ﷺ: "Why are we women not mentioned in the Qurʾān as the men are mentioned?" Soon after, she heard him proclaim from the minbar the newly revealed verse naming both throughout: "the Muslim men and the Muslim women, the believing men and the believing women… the men who remember Allah much and the women who remember — Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and an immense reward."
Lesson: A woman's honest question drew down revelation; in reward and rank before Allah, men and women stand named side by side.

After Zayd ibn Ḥārithah divorced Zaynab, Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ to marry her, abolishing the false rule that an adopted son's former wife is forbidden. ʿĀʾishah remarked that had the Prophet ﷺ concealed any revelation, it would have been this verse, which he conveyed in full.
Lesson: The Prophet ﷺ conveyed even what was hardest upon himself — proof that the message is Allah's, whole and untampered.

At the wedding feast of Zaynab, some guests lingered in the Prophet's home talking. ʿUmar had wished for a command of modesty, and the verse of ḥijāb — "when you ask his wives for something, ask them from behind a screen" — was revealed, along with the etiquette of not overstaying as guests.
Lesson: Modesty and guest-etiquette protect households and hearts alike; consideration for others is part of the dīn.

One of the deniers of Makkah — Ubayy ibn Khalaf in the well-known account — came to the Prophet ﷺ with a decayed bone, crumbled it in his hand and blew the dust: "Will your Lord revive this after it has rotted away?" He ﷺ answered: "Yes — He will revive it, cause you to die, then give you life, then enter you into the Fire." The verses came: "He makes a parable for Us and forgets his own creation, saying: who gives life to bones when they are dust? Say: He will give them life who produced them the first time."
Lesson: The proof of resurrection is in every person's own first creation; the One who began can surely repeat.

People steeped in the gravest sins of Jāhiliyyah — bloodshed and zinā — held back from Islam, fearing their past could never be forgiven. For them descended the widest verse of hope in the Qurʾān: "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against their own souls, do not despair of the mercy of Allah; indeed Allah forgives all sins — He is the Forgiving, the Merciful." Ibn ʿAbbās recounted that it came in answer to exactly such questioners.
Lesson: Despair of Allah's mercy is a greater danger than the sin itself; His pardon is wider than any record of wrong.

Ibn Masʿūd related: three men — two of Quraysh and one of Thaqīf, or the reverse, big of belly and small of understanding — whispered by the Kaʿbah. One said, "Does Allah hear what we say?" Another: "He hears if we speak up, not if we whisper." The third: "If He hears the loud, He hears the quiet." On them was revealed: "You did not conceal yourselves lest your hearing, your sight and your skins bear witness against you — but you thought Allah does not know much of what you do."
Lesson: Nothing is whispered beyond Allah's hearing; on the Last Day one's own limbs are the witnesses.

When a delegation of Banū Tamīm came, Abū Bakr proposed one man be appointed over them and ʿUmar proposed another; the two best of this ummah raised their voices before the Prophet ﷺ until the verses came down: "Do not put yourselves forward before Allah and His Messenger… do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet." Afterwards ʿUmar would speak to him so softly he would have to ask him to repeat, and Abū Bakr said he would now speak only as one confiding a secret.
Lesson: Adab with the Prophet ﷺ is legislation, not mere courtesy; even the greatest lower themselves before revelation.

When "do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet" was revealed, Thābit ibn Qays — known for his loud voice — feared his deeds were in vain and stayed home grieving. The Prophet ﷺ sent word that he was instead a man of Paradise.
Lesson: The fearful self-accounting of a sincere heart is itself beloved to Allah — Thābit's fear earned him glad tidings.

Rough men of the delegation of Banū Tamīm arrived at midday while the Prophet ﷺ was resting in his quarters, and stood outside calling out, "O Muḥammad, come out to us!" The verse descended: "those who call you from behind the chambers — most of them do not reason; had they been patient until you came out to them, it would have been better for them."
Lesson: Respect for another's rest, home and station is part of intellect; impatience at doors betrays a lack of it.

Al-Walīd ibn ʿUqbah was sent to collect zakāh from Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, and out of an old enmity returned claiming they had refused and apostatised. The verse "if a corrupt person brings you news, verify it" was revealed, after which the truth — that they had come out to welcome him — was confirmed.
Lesson: Verify before you act — a single unchecked report can wrong a whole people and ignite a war.

Abū Jubayrah ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk said: when the Prophet ﷺ came to Madīnah, hardly a man among us lacked two or three nicknames, some of which stung their bearers. The Prophet ﷺ would sometimes call a man by one, and be told, "O Messenger of Allah, he hates that name." Then was revealed: "do not insult one another, nor taunt one another with nicknames — wretched is the name of disobedience after faith."
Lesson: A "harmless" nickname that wounds its bearer is sin, not humour; the believer's tongue honours his brother.

Khawlah bint Thaʿlabah pleaded with the Prophet ﷺ about her husband's unjust ẓihār. The opening of the sūrah — "Allah has heard the words of she who disputes with you concerning her husband" — was revealed. ʿĀʾishah marvelled that Allah heard her plea from above the seven heavens.
Lesson: No plea is too humble for Allah; He hears the complaint of one wronged woman above seven heavens and legislates for her.

In a crowded gathering, some were reluctant to make room for newcomers, including veterans of Badr. The verse "make room in the assemblies… Allah will raise those who believe and those given knowledge by degrees" was revealed, teaching the etiquette of accommodating others.
Lesson: Making room for others is worship, and true elevation is by īmān and knowledge, not by where one sits.

A hungry traveller came to the Prophet ﷺ when nothing was found in any of his houses. An Anṣārī took the guest home, where there was only the children's food. He told his wife to put the children to sleep and dim the lamp, and the couple sat through the meal moving their hands as if eating, so the guest would eat his fill unashamed. In the morning the Prophet ﷺ told him Allah had marvelled at what they did — and the verse came: "they prefer others above themselves, though poverty press upon them."
Lesson: Īthār — preferring another over oneself — is the summit of generosity, and Allah Himself broadcasts it with love.

After Ḥudaybiyah, believing women migrated to Madīnah and their disbelieving relatives demanded their return under the treaty. This verse was revealed instructing the believers to test the women's faith and not return those found to be sincere believers, since the treaty's terms did not cover them.
Lesson: Treaties are honoured to the letter — yet faith creates rights that no worldly pact may cancel.

While the Prophet ﷺ stood delivering the Friday khuṭbah, a trade caravan arrived from Shām with drums beating in a season of hunger and high prices. The people slipped out toward it until, Jābir relates, only twelve remained. Then descended: "when they see trade or amusement they break away to it and leave you standing.
On the campaign of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, young Zayd ibn Arqam heard ʿAbdullāh ibn Ubayy say: "Spend nothing on those with Allah's Messenger until they scatter from him," and "if we return to Madīnah, the mightier will expel the meaner from it." Zayd reported it; Ibn Ubayy came and swore he had said no such thing, and even Zayd's own uncle rebuked the boy. Zayd withdrew in shame — until Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn descended confirming every word, and the Prophet ﷺ took Zayd's ear gently: "This is the one whose ear was true to Allah."
Lesson: Allah vindicates the truthful even when the whole camp doubts them; hypocrisy's oaths are a screen that revelation tears.

The Prophet ﷺ had forbidden himself something lawful (honey, in the sound report) to please some of his wives. This verse — "why do you prohibit what Allah has made lawful for you?" — was revealed, with the rule of expiating an oath, restoring the lawful.
Lesson: Not even to please loved ones may the lawful be declared unlawful; the boundaries of ḥalāl and ḥarām are Allah's alone.

A company of jinn, finding the sky newly guarded with flames against eavesdropping, set out to discover the cause. They came upon the Prophet ﷺ leading his companions in the fajr prayer at Nakhlah, and stood listening to the Qurʾān. Allah then informed His Prophet of it: "Say: it has been revealed to me that a company of the jinn listened, then said: indeed we have heard an amazing Qurʾān that guides to right conduct, so we have believed in it."
Lesson: The Qurʾān's call embraces the unseen worlds as well; a single recitation of it can turn hearts its reciter never sees.

Jābir related the Prophet's own account: after the first revelation at Ḥirāʾ, the wahy paused. Walking one day, he heard a voice from the sky, looked up — and there was the angel who had come to him at Ḥirāʾ, seated on a throne between heaven and earth. He returned home trembling: "Wrap me up, wrap me up!" Then Allah revealed: "O you who covers himself — arise and warn, and magnify your Lord, and purify your garments" — and after that the revelation came in succession.
Lesson: The comfort of the cloak gave way to "arise and warn" — with revelation comes responsibility that admits no retreat.

When Jibrīl brought the revelation, the Prophet ﷺ would move his tongue and lips hurriedly along with it, anxious to fix every word before it escaped him. Ibn ʿAbbās relates that Allah then revealed: "Move not your tongue with it to hasten it; upon Us is its collection and its recitation" — so thereafter he would listen in stillness, and when Jibrīl departed, he recited it exactly as it had been recited.
Lesson: The preservation of the Qurʾān is Allah's own undertaking; the bearer of the message need only receive and convey.

The Prophet ﷺ was speaking to leaders of Quraysh, hoping for their Islam, when the blind ʿAbdullāh ibn Umm Maktūm interrupted seeking knowledge, and the Prophet ﷺ frowned and turned away. These verses — "He frowned and turned away because the blind man came to him" — gently corrected him, and he honoured Ibn Umm Maktūm thereafter, greeting him: "Welcome to him on whose account my Lord reproached me."
Lesson: The seeker of guidance outranks the influential; Islam weighs hearts, not social standing.

Ibn ʿAbbās said: when the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madīnah, its people were among the worst in giving full measure — taking generously when they bought and skimping when they sold. Then Allah revealed: "Woe to the defrauders in measure — who, when they take a measure from people, take it in full, but when they measure or weigh for them, give less." After it came down, they gave the finest measure, and remained known for it.
Lesson: Honesty in the marketplace is dīn, not mere ethics; a community can be transformed by a single verse taken seriously.

Abū Bakr kept buying and freeing the weak believers whom Makkah's masters tortured for their Islam — Bilāl beneath the rock among them. Some said he was merely repaying favours owed to him. The tafsīr tradition relates that in him and his like descended: "the most God-fearing will be spared it — who gives his wealth to purify himself, owing no one any favour to be repaid, seeking only the Face of his Lord Most High. And he will surely be pleased."
Lesson: Spending that seeks only Allah's Face needs no audience and no repayment — and its reward is Allah's own pleasure.

The Prophet ﷺ fell ill and did not rise in the night for a time, and the revelation paused. A woman of Quraysh taunted him: "O Muḥammad, I see your shayṭān has finally abandoned you." Then Allah revealed the sūrah of consolation: "By the morning brightness, and by the night when it settles — your Lord has not forsaken you, nor does He hate you; and the last will be better for you than the first."
Lesson: A pause in blessings is not abandonment; Allah's silences carry His care, and the end He plans is better than the beginning.

In the cave of Ḥirāʾ the angel Jibrīl came to the Prophet ﷺ and commanded "Read!" three times, pressing him until he recited the first revelation: "Read in the name of your Lord who created." ʿĀʾishah narrated the complete account of how revelation began.
Lesson: The first command of this dīn was "Read" — knowledge in Allah's name is the foundation on which everything else was built.

al-Kawthar 108:1–3Juzʾ 30Ṣaḥīḥ (the slumber report)
When the Prophet's infant son died, men of Quraysh — al-ʿĀṣ ibn Wāʾil chief among them in the well-known account — called him abtar, "cut off", a man whose line and name would die with him. Allah answered with the shortest sūrah of the Qurʾān: "We have granted you al-Kawthar (the abundance) — so pray to your Lord and sacrifice. Indeed your enemy is the one cut off." Anas relates the Prophet ﷺ received it in a light slumber and lifted his head smiling, describing al-Kawthar as a river granted to him in Paradise.
Lesson: What the mockers called "cut off" became the most invoked name on earth; Allah's gift outweighs every taunt.

Chiefs of Quraysh offered the Prophet ﷺ a compromise: "Worship our gods for a year, and we will worship your God for a year" — or, in other accounts, wealth and kingship if he would only stop. In answer descended the sūrah of pure disavowal: "Say: O disbelievers, I do not worship what you worship, nor are you worshippers of what I worship… to you your religion, and to me mine."
Lesson: Tawḥīd admits no bargaining; coexistence is real, but worship is never split between Allah and other than Him.

When the Prophet ﷺ climbed al-Ṣafā and warned his clan of a coming punishment, his uncle Abū Lahab retorted, "May you perish! Is this why you gathered us?" The sūrah was revealed in response: "Perish the two hands of Abū Lahab, and perish he."
Lesson: Kinship with the Prophet ﷺ availed Abū Lahab nothing; enmity to the truth is ruin, whoever's uncle one may be.

The mushrikīn — and in other accounts the Jews — demanded of the Prophet ﷺ: "Describe your Lord's lineage to us; of what is He made?" In answer descended the sūrah that is a third of the Qurʾān in weight: "Say: He is Allah, One; Allah, the Eternal Refuge; He neither begets nor is born, and there is none comparable to Him" — the complete creed of tawḥīd in four short verses.
Lesson: Allah is known by His own description of Himself, not by human genealogies; ikhlāṣ is creed stripped of every resemblance.
