A good place to begin

The simplest first step is to read the Qur’an for yourself, with a translation. Let the source speak.

What Muslims believe

At its heart, Islam is simple: there is One God — the Creator and Sustainer of everything — who has no partner, no image and no equal. He sent guidance to humanity through prophets, and asks us to worship Him alone and live well.

In brief

  • Tawheed — the absolute oneness of God (Allah)
  • Prophethood — God guided people through messengers, from Adam to Muhammad ﷺ
  • The Qur’an — God’s final revealed words
  • Accountability — life has purpose, and our choices matter

مَنْ هُوَ مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ

Who is Muhammad ﷺ?

Muslims believe Muhammad ﷺ (570–632 CE) was the final prophet — not the founder of a new religion, but the last in a long line including Abraham, Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them). Even his opponents called him “the trustworthy”. His life is recorded in detail; you are welcome to read it and judge for yourself.

In brief

  • Known for honesty long before prophethood
  • Taught mercy, justice, and care for the poor & neighbours
  • His character (seerah) is preserved in great detail

مَا هُوَ الْقُرْآن

What is the Qur’an?

The Qur’an is the scripture Muslims believe is the literal word of God, revealed in Arabic over 23 years. It has been preserved unchanged and memorised word-for-word by millions. The best way to understand it is simply to read it — with a translation in your own language.

In brief

  • Read it yourself — no intermediary needed
  • Available with translation in many languages
  • Start with short, reflective chapters

The purpose of life

Why are we here? Islam offers a clear answer: we were created intentionally, by a wise Creator, to know Him, to do good, and to return to Him. This gives life meaning, dignity and direction — and turns difficulty into something purposeful.

In brief

  • Life is a trust and a test, not an accident
  • Worship is gratitude, not burden
  • Justice and accountability give actions weight

Common questions & misconceptions

Honest answers to fair questions

Is Islam a religion of violence?

No. Islam teaches that killing one innocent person is like killing all of humanity (Qur’an 5:32). Like any community, individuals may act wrongly, but the teaching itself calls to justice, mercy and peace.

How does Islam view women?

Islam grants women rights to property, education, inheritance, consent in marriage and dignity. Cultural practices sometimes differ from the teaching — it is worth distinguishing the two.

Do Muslims worship a different God?

Muslims worship the One God of Abraham, Moses and Jesus — “Allah” is simply the Arabic word for God, used by Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews too.

What about Jesus (peace be upon him)?

Muslims deeply love and honour Jesus as a mighty prophet and the Messiah, born miraculously of the Virgin Mary. He has an honoured chapter named after his mother in the Qur’an.

If you choose: what the shahada means

There is no compulsion in religion. If one day your heart is convinced, becoming Muslim is as simple as sincerely declaring: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” There is no fee, no ceremony required, and no rush. The choice is entirely yours, and it is between you and God.
