Hadith of the Seerah

Authentic ahadith tied to a known period or event in the Prophet's ﷺ life — each with its reference and grade.

🕋 The Makkah Period

From the first revelation in Cave Hira (610 CE) to the Hijrah (622 CE): thirteen years of calling to tawhid under persecution. The hadith below are ones whose occasion in this period is genuinely known.

The First Revelation — Cave Hira

Age 40 · 610 CE

The very beginning of prophethood: Jibril ؑ came to him in the cave of Hira and brought the first words of the Qur'an Majeed.

The first of revelation that came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was true dreams in sleep… Then solitude was made dear to him, and he would withdraw to the cave of Hira. The angel came to him and said: "Read!" He said: "I am not one who reads."

The Pause & "Arise and Warn"

610 CE

After a pause in revelation, the wahy resumed and the command to publicly warn was given — the start of the open mission.

The revelation paused for a while. While I was walking I heard a voice from the sky, and there was the angel who had come to me at Hira… Then Allah revealed: "O you who are wrapped up! Arise and warn."

Open Call from as-Safa

c. 613 CE

When commanded to "warn your nearest kin" (26:214), he climbed as-Safa and openly called Quraysh to Allah — and Abu Lahab rejected him.

When "And warn your nearest kinsfolk" was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ climbed as-Safa and called out: "O Banu Fihr! O Banu ʿAdiy!" … "If I told you that cavalry in the valley meant to attack you, would you believe me?" They said: "Yes, we have never known you to lie."

Patience Under Persecution

c. 614–615 CE

As the weak believers were tortured, Khabbab ibn al-Aratt ؓ complained of their suffering while the Prophet ﷺ rested by the Kaʿbah, and he gave them this counsel of patience and certain victory.

We complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was reclining on his cloak in the shade of the Kaʿbah… He said: "By Allah, Allah will complete this matter until a rider travels from Sanʿaʾ to Hadramawt fearing none but Allah — but you are being hasty."

Abu Bakr ؓ — The Foremost to Believe

Early Makkah

Abu Bakr as-Siddiq ؓ was among the very first to believe and the Prophet's ﷺ closest friend. ʿAisha ؓ recalled how, from her earliest memory, the Prophet ﷺ visited them morning and evening, and the trials her father bore for the faith in Makkah.

I never remembered my parents believing in any religion other than the true religion (Islam), and not a day passed without the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visiting us at both ends of the day, morning and evening.

ʿUqba's Assault at the Kaʿbah

Makkah period

Among the worst of what the pagans of Quraysh did to the Prophet ﷺ: as he prayed at the Kaʿbah, ʿUqba ibn Abi Muʿayt wrapped a cloth around his neck and throttled him, until Abu Bakr ؓ pulled the man away.

While the Prophet ﷺ was praying in the Hijr of the Kaʿbah, ʿUqba ibn Abi Muʿayt came and put his garment around the Prophet's ﷺ neck and throttled him violently, until Abu Bakr ؓ came and pushed him away.

The Strength of ʿUmar's ؓ Islam

Makkah period

The acceptance of Islam by ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab ؓ was a turning point that strengthened the believers, who could now pray openly at the Kaʿbah. ʿAbdullah ibn Masʿud ؓ summed up its effect.

We have remained mighty (honoured and strong) ever since ʿUmar embraced Islam.

The Splitting of the Moon

Makkah period

When the people of Makkah demanded a sign, Allah split the moon into two parts before them — a miracle witnessed in the Makkan years and recalled in Surah al-Qamar (54:1).

The people of Makkah asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to show them a sign, so he showed them the splitting of the moon (into two parts).

Migration to Abyssinia & the Najashi

c. 615 CE

As persecution grew, a group of believers migrated to Abyssinia (Ethiopia) where the just Christian king, the Najashi (Negus, Ashama), gave them refuge. When he later died as a believer, the Prophet ﷺ — by then in Madinah — announced his death and prayed for him.

When the Najashi died, the Prophet ﷺ said: "A righteous man has died today; so stand up and pray for your brother Ashama."

Khadijah ؓ — Glad Tidings of a House in Paradise

Early Makkah

Khadijah bint Khuwaylid ؓ was the first to believe and the Prophet's ﷺ greatest support in the years of persecution. Jibril ؑ conveyed Allah's greeting to her and the glad tidings of a house in Paradise.

Jibril came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is Khadijah who has come… Convey to her the greeting of peace from her Lord and from me, and give her the glad tidings of a house in Paradise of reeds, wherein there is no clamour and no toil."

The Boycott & the Year of Sorrow

c. 619 CE

After the years of the boycott in the valley of Abu Talib, the Prophet ﷺ lost both his uncle Abu Talib and his wife Khadijah ؓ in one year — the "Year of Sorrow." Of Abu Talib's end the Prophet ﷺ spoke of intercession lightening, but not removing, his punishment.

The Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Talib: "O uncle, say: there is no god but Allah — a word by which I may plead for you before Allah." … But the last thing he said was: "He is upon the religion of ʿAbd al-Muttalib."

The Day of at-Taʾif

c. 619–620 CE

Rejected and stoned at at-Taʾif, the Prophet ﷺ was met by the Angel of the Mountains offering to crush its people between the two mountains. He refused, hoping their descendants would worship Allah — the hardest day he recalled.

ʿAisha asked: "Has a day come upon you harder than the day of Uhud?" He said: "I suffered much from your people… and the worst I suffered from them was the day of al-ʿAqaba [at at-Taʾif]… Then the Angel of the Mountains called me and said: If you wish, I will crush them between the two mountains."

The Pledges of al-ʿAqaba

c. 621–622 CE

A delegation of the Ansar pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ at al-ʿAqaba near Mina, paving the way for the Hijrah. ʿUbada ibn as-Samit ؓ described the terms of the pledge they gave.

We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to hear and obey… and not to dispute the authority of its people, and to speak the truth wherever we were, fearing no blame for the sake of Allah.

Al-Isra wal-Miʿraj

c. 621 CE

In one night he was carried from Makkah to al-Aqsa and ascended through the heavens; there the five daily prayers were ordained — a late-Makkan event.

Then fifty prayers were enjoined upon me… I kept going back between my Lord and Musa until He said: "O Muhammad, they are five prayers each day and night, and for every prayer is ten, so that is fifty prayers."
