Ghazawat — What the Sources Record

Only Sunni sources are used. Every text below is quoted from its source with its reference; hadith grades are the ones the collections give. No story has been written on top of them: a narrative will be added only from statements a named scholar has reviewed.

Honouring the Prophet’s household and all the Companions is part of the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah. This page presents sources; it does not pass judgement on any Companion.

The expeditions, their names and years are those of our Ghazawat list. For each one, this page lists the hadith whose wording names it (the words searched are shown) and the passages in which the maghāzī and history books mention it. It gives no numbers, dates or names of its own; where a source gives them, they are that source’s words.

Much of the maghāzī literature comes through al-Wāqidī and Ibn Isḥāq. Where a passage names them, the verdicts the rijāl dictionary records on them are shown as recorded: for al-Wāqidī they differ sharply between its sources.

The Companions who took part are honoured by all Muslim scholars; nothing here ranks or judges them. Only a few passages per book are shown for each expedition (the author’s own section on it first); the expedition card tells you how many places in these books name it.
